<p> SHERINGTON HISTORICAL SOCIETY</p><p>MINUTES COMMITTEE MEETING NO. 151</p><p>Held at 1a Church Road, Sherington 8 th October 2013 7.30 pm</p><p>Present: Chair: Mark Vale, Vice Chair: Kay Turrell, Treasurer: Diana Morgan, Secretary: Betty Feasey, Publicity: Liz Revell. Apologies: Caroline Leslie</p><p>Approval of Minutes: Action</p><p>The Minutes of Meeting 150 were approved and signed by MV. Copy to KT for signature KT and file.</p><p>Matters Arising</p><p>The Historical Society have requested a table at the Sherington Christmas Bazaar (Friday 29th November, 6 – 8.30 pm). We still have copies left from the re-print of ‘A Little Bird Told Me’ and they will be on sale alongside copies of the framed Crump print. We also plan to hold a Silent Auction for the watercolour original by Caroline of the cover of ALBTM. </p><p>Chairman’s Report</p><p>Emails: 1. The re-opening of the Buckingham Canal after completion of extensive restoration work takes place on Saturday 25th October, 2013. The Rt. Hon. John Bercow will be officiating. 2. Made in Milton Keynes is an exhibition in Milton Keynes Central Library (ending 7 th November) to publicise the organisations and products situated in the Milton Keynes Area. 3. MK Rose opening ceremony on Saturday 9th November. MK Rose is an artwork designed by Gordon Young and commissioned by Milton Keynes Cenotaph Trust and Milton Keynes Parks Trust, supported by Milton Keynes Council. The installation consists of 140 pillars inscribed with significant dates submitted by local people/organisations and arranged in the geometric design of a flower. Sherington’s unique historic event - ‘Burying the Hatchet’ - occurred when the universities of Oxford and Cambridge met in 1935 on The Knoll and agreed to resolve their differences. In 1995 the ceremony was re-enacted and a tree planted at the Village Hall. We are pleased to record that this has been documented on one of the pillars.</p><p>Open Day – 5 th October 2013 MV thanked everyone for their contribution to a very successful Open Day including the Refreshment Team, led by Pearl Teasdale, and Dave Revell for his help in staging displays, electronics, etc.</p><p>1 Minutes of meeting 151 8th October 2013 Treasurer’s Report: </p><p>Financial Position as at 8th October 2013</p><p>Bank Statement: £2,756.49p Cash in hand: £111.00p Building Society £2,134.85p</p><p>N.B. In addition, £413 was paid in last week and various outgoings/income still to be recorded (Village Hall, book and picture sales, etc.). DM mentioned we should give thought to where we ‘invest’ any profit accrued. ------</p><p>Results for Open Day – 5th October 2013..... Raffle £33.00 Refreshments £22.89 Entrance £25.00 25 members Entrance £30.00 12 visitors ------£110.89</p><p>Visiting Speaker £40.00 Hire of Hall £12.00 ------£52.00</p><p>===== £58.89 =====</p><p>DM reported that we ‘broke even’ on 8th October (allowing for refreshment expenses, sundries, etc).</p><p> a) Invoice received from MKHA for membership and hosting website - £30 in total.</p><p> b) MKHA have large maps for sale of Milton Keynes with points of historical interest highlighted, that we could buy for £3 and sell-on to make a profit. Members agreed that we wouldn’t be likely to sell many. </p><p>2 Minutes of meeting 151 8th October 2013 Secretary’s Report</p><p>Following Caroline’s recent stay in hospital, the committee were delighted to receive the following message from her:</p><p>Dear Everyone,</p><p>What a lovely surprise Roger found on the doorstep yesterday. The basket of plants are beautiful; cyclamen is one of my favourites, especially in white.</p><p>I was so pleased to hear that the Open Day was a great success and well attended, and that Bruce Smith enlightened and entertained his audience last Tuesday evening. Bruce telephoned me on Wednesday to wish me a speedy recovery and to thank me for the poster that illustrated his talk. He even offered to let me know when he is next in the area, so I can hear a similar presentation, since he realised my disappointment at missing his talk in Sherington.</p><p>Unfortunately, it will be a few weeks before I will be out and about, but I am looking forward to seeing you all at the SHS. But I do hope to spend the recovery time working on my illustrated children's book set in Sherington.</p><p>Best regards, Caroline.</p><p>We send our best wishes and hope to see Caroline at our meetings very soon.</p><p>Emails: BF a) Replied to Email from Mandy Eves enquiring about pictures of her as ‘May Queen’’, further research required.</p><p> th b) 14 October 2013 - Email from Roger Smith enquiring about his ancestors William MV Henry, Mary Elizabeth and their son, John William, all buried in the St. Laud’s churchyard. Can we help in identifying where the graves are and their date of death? Hopes to visit Sherington in the near future. Passed to MV. LR c) Nielson Book Company – notifying of book order ready for collection. Passed to LR.</p><p>Forthcoming Meetings</p><p>Members Can Talk/Sing – 12th November 2013</p><p>LR said Caroline might be available to talk about the songs – origins etc. LR and Tony LR Pilcher will be playing guitars. Philip Smith will take part with other members of the Sherington Folk Group. DM can give a talk about producing the Millennium Son et Lumiere, but will carry this forward if the musical items are sufficient. Discussion followed about the possibility of this subject being put on the programme as whole evening next year, with costumes and video to accompany Diana’s recounting of the conception, planning, direction and presentation of the</p><p>3 Minutes of meeting 151 8th October 2013 whole Son et Lumiere event.</p><p>Christmas Party 10th December 2013 KT</p><p>KT to ask if Enid Pepper would like to devise a Quiz and whether Sheila and Pat Quinn can help with provision and serving drink for the evening. (Jacobs wine, Hopping Mad – sale or return)</p><p>January Jolly – 28th January 2014 DM DM to speak to Pearl about the menu and booking Chester Arms, as the New Thursday Club has booked the venue for date in the week SHS usually reserve. Discussion followed as to the possibility of holding our annual meal later in the year. </p><p>A.O.B . LR Ian Collinge needs to re-vamp the ‘shop area’ of the SHS website and would like pictures of items we have for sale. LR to send photos of ALBTM, Crump painting and ‘Murder’ booklet. </p><p> Committee were reminded of the Opening Ceremony of MK Rose on Saturday 9th November, 2013.
