Name: ______

Exponents Word Problem Extravaganza!!!!

1. Anusha wants to wrap a cube-shaped box of chocolates for Alicia’s birthday present. The side length of the box is 12 cm. What is the minimum amount of wrapping paper (in cm2) that she would need to wrap the present?

2. A cube-shaped jello mold is filled with gelatin for a party. Each side of the mold is 8 cm. If one serving of jello is 32 cm3, how many servings would you get from the jello cube? (HINT: Find the total volume of jello made first).

3. Albert Einstein stated that the amount of energy stored in any object can be calculated using the equation E=mc2. The mass, m, is measured in kilograms and the speed of light, c, is approximately 3 x 108 m/s. The amount of energy stored, E, is measured in joules. How much energy is stored in a paper clip that weighs 1 gram? (HINT: 1 g = 0.001 kg)

4. A colony of bacteria triples every hour. If Connor ingests 200 salmonella bacteria in a piece of chicken, how many will he have in his body after 1 hour? After 3 hours? After 24 hours? 5. The formula that estimates the stopping distance for a car on an icy road is . The distance, d, is measured in metres and the speed of the car, s, is measured in kilometres per hour. The mass of the car, c, is in kilograms. If Wiki is driving a 1500 kg car at 40 km/h and sees a chipmunk 80 m ahead of her, will she be able to stop in time to avoid running it over? (Show proof!)

6. The surface area of a sphere can be calculated using the formula SA=4R2. If the radius of the earth is 6400 km, what is its surface area?

7. The diagram shows a circle inscribed in a square with a side length of 16 cm. What is the area of the shaded region? Give your answer to the nearest hundredth of a square centimeter. (area of a circle =  x radius2 ) 8. The formula, d = 4.9t2, estimates the distance, d, in metres that an object will fall in t seconds. If Connor got pushed out of a plane, how far would he fall in 2 s? In 10 s? How long would it take before he hit the ground, if the plane was at 6000 m?
