COMMENTS BY PREVIOUS STUDENTS ON DOS EMULATORS THEY USED WITH VISTA

Virtual PC 1. What worked for me was using Virtual PC (VPC) and running XP inside of it. I used it mainly for the graphics and sound projects (the remaining projects/assignments, if I remember correctly, worked on Vista). The problem I had was not being able to access the files locally. I had to email the files to myself and then open the email in VPC and download the file. VPC does not support USB and CD drives so thumb drives and CD-roms were useless. I could utilize a network to share files, but only if I was on a network I controlled - which was at home. So, the internet was my only option. There could be another way (I am not sure), but I wasn't able to figure it out. There is another emulator called "DOSbox", but I again wasn't able to figure how that worked so I gave up on that idea.

2. I had tried a couple of emulators (one of which was DosBox, but I don't remember what the other one was), but didn't have much success with those. For the first couple of projects, I installed Microsoft Virtual PC 2007 and created an XP virtual computer. It was kind of an inconvenience, but it at least allowed me to work on my own computer. Since I didn't want to register the copy of XP I had installed, it expired after 30 days, so for the last two projects I borrowed someone else's computer to test the projects on.

Dosbox 1. I used DosBox, an x86 emulator with DOS for windows. http://www.dosbox.com/ Works fine however it runs a little slower than the actual WinXP command prompt, so some things such as the animation project may appear "choppy," as you can sometimes briefly see the transition between clearing the screen and redrawing.
