<p> Noyce Scholarship Grant 2017-2021</p><p>Scholarships under the Noyce Grant are for BAE/BS students in a STEM field seeking teaching certification. Funding is available for up to the last 2 years of the student’s program culminating in certification. $10,000 is available for the first year and $16,000 for the second year. The goal of the project is to recruit highly qualified and diverse STEM students to teach in schools with over 50% of their students qualified for free and reduced price lunch, and to improve science and math teaching. The grant personnel will work closely with students and their mentor teachers to achieve these goals. Students will be placed in regional high needs schools for their classroom experience. The scholarship provides funding up front but is contingent upon two years of employment in a school with over 50% free or reduced lunch for every year of funding received. Failure to meet the requirement will result in a default of the loan. Consequently students must complete a FAP at the time of application. To qualify for the grant, students must be in the last two years of a program that will culminate in a BS and a BAE in one of the STEM endorsed fields. (Math, Biology, Chemistry, Computer Science, Earth Science, Physics). Students also must have 3 letters of reference and complete an application that includes an essay that describes their interest in children and teaching. Selection will be dependent upon a set of criteria that includes need, under-representation, academic achievement, and interest in working with children in high-need schools. Beyond the requirements of the Department of Education are other activities that will require participation:</p><p>Year 1 Students:  Complete modules aimed at understanding and teaching high-need students in math and science classrooms.  Participate in 3 6-week rotations, which provide Scholars with activities that help them become aware of essential aspects of teaching high need students.  Design, implement and reflect on after-school activities and events for high- need students in Inquiry Circles.  Participate with other Scholars and currently teaching Noyce graduates in a Video Club to explore inquiry learning.  Plan research to be presented at the EWU Student Research and Creative Works Symposium.</p><p>Year 2 Students:  Complete field work and student teaching with effective mentor teachers in high need schools in SPS  Continue participation in the Video Club, Discussion Board and Inquiry Circles through a 2-year induction.  Conduct research project and present study at the EWU Student Research and Creative Works Symposium, if not finished in Year 1.</p>
