Rhydwer of Cardiff Mercantile Marine War Medal 1914-1918 John D. Bulmer Item Number 3049 Item Number 3146 ___________________________________________________________________________________________________ EDITORIAL Back in mid-1992 some 28 years ago, the late John Hayward and I were chatting and I told him my catalogue needed a revamp, to which he said why not call it ‘Dixon’s Gazette’ as in Gazette! He had produced ‘Haywards Gazette’ to sell his stocks of medals for several years and had ceased the printing of his Gazette in 1979. He first published it in 1966 and it took the medal collecting world by storm as no company had produced such a large, varied, unusual selection of medals for collectors, it was a great success. Our previous catalogue was summer 1991 and had over 900 items for sale such as your average Waterloo Medal at £365 to £450 and even a Royal Scots Greys at £675 to Pte Cunningham Bowes who served in Captain Fenton’s Troop at Waterloo and was wounded in the charge. A 1st China War Medal to H.M.S. Nemesis at £155 and a Sutlej Medal to the 29th Foot wounded at Ferozeshur in December 1845 at £165. A couple of 4 clasp officially impressed Crimea at £235 each and a Red River 1870 to the 1/60 Rifles at £575 to name but a few. The average price of a Zulu War 1877-79 was £140, and we had 7 to choose from all N.E.F or E.F. In 1992 we became ‘computerised’ with some local experts setting up a custom-made database and hiring additional staff to use the computers Dixon’s Gazette was born No1 being produced in September 1992 exactly 28 years ago. We still can access that database it holds approximately an archive of over 33,000 medal records.!! Of course computers have advanced at a pace and you will have noticed we have had a few issues with our website due to a cross over period in which our new website should have been up and running, this being interrupted with lockdown, our designers had to put their efforts into becoming key computer support workers with local hospitals. We are hoping to launch our new website soon and when it is, I hope you will be impressed. During the last 28 years things have changed a lot, one of which is the auction house’s which in the good old days sold for private vendors and collectors alike, the dealers were the main contact between the auctions and collectors either buying for them on commission or for their own stock. Alas things like premiums have come to the fore which makes buying by dealers for stock more and more difficult which when between 25% to 33% commission is added to the account at the end of the day, which is why we are tending to buy material privately these days. We have seen a lot of changes and I wonder what the long-term effect of Covid 19 is going to be. There has been talk of a number of collector’s shows reopening but I fear that the Government restrictions and safety of us and our clients will make it rather hard to do business and long days if we have to wear masks and or face visors to attend such shows. Fifteen to twenty minutes in our showroom is bad enough. We are featuring a couple of private collections, and other acquisitions sourced from various places in this our 100th issue of Dixon’s Gazette and hope you all find something you fancy. We want to say thank you for your business, and our hope is we can meet you at the medal fairs up and down the country soon.
