Second Wind Running Club is offering a prize for the best article submitted to In Passing in 2008 for a re- port or story on a race of 10K or less! Yes, that’s right. You can achieve fame, notoriety, and a valuable prize for simply writing about a running event that may take less than an hour to complete. You don’t even have to be fast or place in your age group. You only need to do a good job describing the event, your experience, or some facet of a short-distance race. You don’t even have to run. If you are a spectator at a 5K or 10K race, just write an article about it and send it in to In Passing. The winner will be selected by a vote of the Second Wind Board and announced at the January 2009 Annual Banquet. Electronic-Only Option for the Newsletter We are offering the option of receiving In Passing via e-mail as a .pdf. Since we print on recycled paper, this won’t save a tree, but it might reduce clutter around your house. Also, you will receive the full-color version of the newsletter a day or two ahead of everyone else and get the scoop on all the exciting club doings. If you are interested in this option, contact Bill Dey at [email protected]. 4 In Passing ● September/October 2008 ● secondwindrunningclub.org Second Wind IN THIS ISSUE 6 President’s Corner Upcoming Activities RRCA News 7 Women’s Fitness Run 8 Stan Shobe Spotlight Sunday, September 27 10 Bonnie McElwee Spotlight see page 33 11 Beginning Women’s Running Group Recap Part 2 Last summer fun run at Meadowbrook and Pizza Party at Village Inn The Fartlek 13 Tuesday, October 21 14 Howl at the Moon 15 Funny Running Allerton Park Trail Run Sunday, October 26 16 X-Terra Xtreme 12K see page 32 19 S Race Results 27 Howl at the Moon photos 31 Racing Ahead 32 Allerton Park Trail Run Please send corrections, comments, criticisms, or suggestions to Jeff Kelly at [email protected]. 33 Women’s Fitness Run 35 Second Wind Application For changes in street address, telephone number, or e-mail address, please contact the Second Wind database manager, Kim Nystrom at knystrom@uiuc. edu. In Passing ● September/October 2008 ● secondwindrunningclub.org 5 IN PASSING President’s Corner September and October are always busy months for Second Wind members. We have the speaker series, Women’s Fitness 5K, Allerton Trail Race, pizza party, marathon training, and the race circuit. The September speaker series featured Mark Knutson, the event manager for the Illinois Marathon. Mark talked about the current status and future plans of the Illinois Marathon. His talk was at 6:30 p.m. on Monday, September 15 at Jupiter’s II, near the corner of Windsor and Duncan. The 23rd Women’s Fitness 5K will be held on Saturday, Sep- tember 27. I encourage all women to run or walk in this great event. Gentlemen, come on out and support the women in your lives by cheering them on or helping out at the finish line. The 21st Allerton Trail Race will be held on Sunday, October 26. In trying to be more environmen- tally friendly, we are printing fewer brochures and encouraging everyone to register online. If you prefer not to register online, entry forms can be downloaded from the Web site. You can also pick up an entry form at Body n’ Sole. If you are not participating in this race, I encourage you to volunteer. The last fun run for the season at Meadowbrook Park will be on Tuesday, October 21. Immediately after the run will be the pizza party at the Village Inn. Once again, Second Wind will pick up tab for pizza and soft drinks. Bill Dey is working diligently to update the race circuit results from the Fisher Fair 5K, Run for the Bagel 5K/10K, and the Mahomet 5K and half-marathon. Check the Web site for the latest standings. There are five more circuit races remaining with the next race being the Shoreline Classic 15K in Deca- tur. I’m always open to new ideas, so send me an e-mail if you have a great idea that you would like to share. I hope to see you at one of the above events.
