A further 21,268 workers who live elsewhere commute into the borough to work, where they make up 28.4% of Tameside’s ‘workplace population’ of 74,944. The Census form does not distinguish between those commuting daily and those commuting less frequently. People who do not work and/or fall outside the 16-74 age range are not covered by this report. Some may commute to study at a school or college, but the Census did not ask about this. In other words, its ‘daytime’ population of workers is lower than its ‘night-time’ population. A similar analysis may be carried out for each ward of Tameside (see map below). Workers may both live and work within the same ward (this includes those who work in their own home), or travel to/from another part of the Borough, or travel to/from further afield. This is indicated by the colour coding:- Source: Table TT010 Most of the wards show a similar pattern to the Borough as a whole, with more workers living there (right-hand bar) than working there (left-hand bar). The outstanding exception is Ashton St Peters, which has over four times as many jobs (15,295) as it does working residents (3787). Other lesser exceptions are Ashton St Michaels, Dukinfield and Hyde Godley. 6 300-500 Commuting within 500-700 Tameside 700-874 Main ward-to-ward flows The map on the right summarises the biggest flows of commuters between Tameside wards. As can be seen, all flows of more than 500 commuters (blue and pink arrows) are directed into Ashton St Peters ward. However, those working within their own ward (not shown) nearly always outnumber those travelling to any other single ward Occupational Groups The chart below shows how the Source: occupational profile of the Table SWS203 workforce living and working in Tameside compares with the profile of the entire workforce resident in Tameside. One is a subset of the other. Those staying within the Borough to work are less likely than average to belong to managerial, professional, associate professional and administrative occupations.
