I'm sorry this edition is later than normal but a small health problem and preparation of notes for our beginners course saw the normal schedule in total tatters but here we are only a couple of weeks late. This edition is a little larger than normal and although some of our regular columns are still resting till next year we've still produced plenty of reading for you over the next few months. The next edition is due in Feb 1992. The group has been fairly active over the past few weeks with our beginners course and family history seminar but overall I feel we lost a bit of our momentum achieved in 1990 and the February meeting will discuss how we get back to where we were. If you have any ideas please come along and let us hear them. Well it is that time of year again so on behalf of our office bearers 1 would like to wish all of our readers a happy, safe and merry Christmas and New Year and look forward to meeting you again in these pages in 1992. Page Two THE AREA ADMINISTRATORS CORNER Dear Members, A very interesting evening was spent at our October meeting, listening to Mr Ean Downing speak on his family, and their ties with the Warrnambool area. Mr Downing Snr commenced the operations of the foundry in Warrnambool, which was later formed into a Company and known as Alderdice's Brass Foundry. Ean Downing is now the manager of the Company which still operates in Henna Street (since 1908). Doug Holmes, editor of the South West Genealogist, has had a spell in hospital, I hope that you have fully recovered Doug. A family history seminar was held in Warrnambool on Saturday November 16th and was conducted by a team from the A.I.G.S. in Melbourne. A report appears elsewear in this newsletter. My thanks to members who have kindly opened their homes to billet several of the members from Melbourne, and to members who have assisted in any way. A special thanks to Max Baudinette who made time available to be interviewed on 3WAYFM Radio Station. Noel Hallam Area Administrator ******************************** GENEALOGICAL SEMINAR A successful genealogical seminar was held at the Warrnambool Fire Station on 16th November by the team from A.I.G.S. in Melbourne. Some forty four paying customers attended and should see a profit of around $200.00 realized from the days activities. A large range of books were brought up from Melbourne for the comprehensive bookstall giving participants a chance to acquire books not normally available here in Warrnambool. It is hoped that further seminars along similar lines will be arranged in the future. If you have any topics that would be suitable please advise our secretary and we my be able to tailor a seminar to suit depending on the availability of suitable speakers. Jenny Carter from LaTrobe Library ran a Family Search course at the conclussion of the seminar proper on the new ROM based computer Family History resource available at the library. The day concluded over dinner and drinks at Macy's Bistro where group members had a chance to get to know our visitors from Melbourne. ******************************** COMPUTERS FOR GENEALOGY At our November meeting Theresa Collis and Peter Shipp brought along an Apple computer and a IBM compatible Amstrad computer to demonstrate genealogical programs for these computers. Family Tree for the Apple and Roots 111 for the Amstrad. The use of these programs and some of their special features were demonstrated to an interested group of members. Sample printouts were distributed to show the detail possible on reports etc. Page Three APPLICATIONS TO LOCAL EXEMPTION COURTS AS A GENEALOGICAL SOURCE (Submitted by Betty Beavis, Branch Research Officer) In last months newsletter applications for exemption from war service in WW1 were discussed as a genealogical source. If he had to go into camp it would mean considerable financial loss and in any case he would require a long time to dispose of his property and settle his affairs. His brother was disabled in one hand and could do but little work. There were four sons in the family, 2 of whom were married. One sister lived at home. They had 18 acres of crop. They had 94 acres in one property and 212 in another. It Page Four was stocked principally with sheep and young cattle. Examption granted till 31st December. William Percival OAKLEY, Warrnambool, butcher, applied on the ground that he was sole support of his invalid father and two brothers and sisters and had a big business in the town. His eligible brother was in camp at Royal Park. Application granted. ******************************** MARIES MEMORABILIA This month's column will be a request for information rather than a reproduction of an item from the Government Gazette. Marie's request follows HELP NEEDED I am endeavouring to obtain information about the 200 plus names of early settlers named on our Pioneer Honour Board. Some names have eluded me altogether and there are many sources still to be checked.
