For Esca, with Strings Attached!

FOR ESCA, WITH STRINGS ATTACHED! To complete the body and soul activities for ESCA on Saturday, June 11, classical string players will give a benefit concert in the Lutheran Church in Geneva’s vielle ville (20 rue Verdaine) beginning at 5 p.m. The centerpiece of the concert will be the European premier of a cello solo, “Songs Without Words”, written by the American composer Larry Alan Smith and performed by the well-known musician Daniel Grosgurin. Dr. Smith, who was recently praised by the New York Times as “a composer of great gifts”, studied with Nadia Boulanger in Paris and Vincent Persichetti at the Juilliard School in New York City, where he has also taught. His piece will be performed at the end of March at the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C. accompanied by a reading by Rita Dove, the former U.S. Poet Laureate. Maestro Grosgurin studied with Pierre Fournier and Janos Starker. Following his debut at Wigmore Hall in 1976, the Geneva-born cellist has been a soloist with orchestras world-wide and is in demand for master classes. Since 1990 he has taught exclusively at the Conservatoire Superior de Music in Geneva. The string Trio Severini, who have performed together in the Symphony Orchestra of Zurich for more than ten years and in a chamber group for eight years, is composed of Marie-Josee, violin; Ursula Warren, viola; and Gerhard Wyder, cello. They will perform works by Haydn, Schubert and Borodin, among other favorite composers. Following the concert the musicians will join the audience for light refreshments. Entrance is free, and donations are welcome! English Speaking Cancer Association 150 rte de Ferney CP 2100, 1211 Genève 2 Tel : 022 791 63 05 E-mail: [email protected] Web : www.cancersupport.ch .
