Xiamen University 2011 China Study Summer Program Program Overview Xiamen University is pleased to welcome international students who are interested in China and its culture for a fascinating three-week course from July 4th to 23rd, 2011. The intensive course program will include in-depth academic studies and special cultural events. Through taking part, you will not only gain a better understanding of China, but also fall in love with the vibrant gateway which is Xiamen! Xiamen University was founded in 1921 by Tan Kah Kee, the well-known patriotic overseas Chinese leader. It is one of Chinese higher-level universities designated for the state key construction of the “211 Project” and the “985 Project”. Over the past ninety years, as the result of following the school motto: Pursue Excellence, Strive for Perfection, Xiamen University has accumulated rich experience in offering its educational programs and has presented its distinctive features in running the programs. Xiamen University has a graduate school,24 schools containing 63 departments and 11 research institutes and research centers. With 14 Doctoral degrees in first –class disciplines, and 17 Master degrees in first-class disciplines, the university offers 83 undergraduate programs, 225 graduate programs, and 140 PhD programs. There are 15 Post doctoral research centers, 9 subjects of “national educational centers for talents”,5 first-class and 9 second-class national key disciplines. Many disciplines of Xiamen University are at the top level in China and have a certain impact abroad. Xiamen University has a high level team of faculty and staff including 2475 full-time faculty and professional researchers, 1522 professors and associate professors of whom 22 are academicians of Chinese Academy of Sciences and Chinese Academy of Engineering. The university now has a total enrollment of over 38000 full-time students on campus, including 20575 undergraduates, 15590 master students, 2483 doctoral students, and over 2000 international students. Xiamen University is now making great strides towards its goal of "building a high-level university well-known both at home and abroad." City of Xiamen Xiamen is a well-known coastal city and tourist venue on the Southeast coast of China. It is a maritime trade centre thanks to its excellent, sheltered deep-water harbor. It has an excellent reputation as one of the most livable cities in China, and is listed on the UN Habitat Scroll of Honor. It is considered one of the cleanest cities in China, and is one of China’s Garden Cities, one of the National Environmental Protection Model Cities in China, and one of the best sightseeing cities in China. Program Dates: July 4th to 23rd, 2011 Participants: Students from overseas who are currently enrolled at a university Language of Instruction: English Cultural Excursions Over the course of the three weeks, students will be taken on a range of cultural excursions to give them experience of the dynamism of local society. These will include city highlights, company visits and a “Magic Minnan” arts performance, a highlight for visiting students! Course Content Module One: Chinese Language 28 class hours Module Two: Changing China and Economic Reforms General description: 27 class hours, plus in-depth visits to the Min Nan Buddhist College and local township& village enterprise.
