The compositions of the Penguin Cafe Orchestra draw upon traditional ethnic music from around the world to create what Simon Jeffes describes as "imaginary folklore music." These influences range from English and Celtic (Scottish and Irish), • American blues and country, Cajun and Reggae, to Japanese, African, and Venezuelan forms, as well as classical, folk, rock, and pop. Simon Jeffes began his career as an arranger, producer, composer, and and collaborator in 1972, working with such artists as Rod Argent, the Sex Pistols, Sid Vicious, Joe Strummer (now with The Clash), Adam and the Ants, Bow Wow Wow, Twyla Tharp and Andre Gregory, and Martha Ladley (formerly of Martha and the Muffins). In that same year he formed the Penguin Cafe Orchestra, which took shape as a loose association of musicians who came together in various permutations to perform Mr. Jeffe's music. Since then, the group has toured in Holland, Germany, France, and Japan. The Penguin Cafe Orchestra's recordings include "Music from the Penguin Cafe" (1976/0bscure Records); "Penguin Cafe Orchestra" (1981/Editions EG); "The Penguin Cafe Orchestra Mini Album" (1983/Editions EG); and "Broadcasting From Home" (1984/Editions EG).
