Introduction As in the previous years we hereby want to report on our plant collection activities in 2003 and their results. By that we want to inform all partners and contributors to Flora Hellenica what additional plant material from which regions of Greece is now available in Botanical Museum Berlin-Dahlem. This material will hopefully be used for an updating of the published two volumes of Flora Hellenica and for the elaboration of all future volumes. In 2003 we could realize two excursions, one in early springtime and one in autumn: March 30th - April 30th Ioannina, Kozanis, Imathia, Pella, Halkidhiki, Thessaloniki September 30th - Achaia, Argolis, Arkadhia, Ilias, Lakonia and Messinia October 24th Springtime 2003 in northern Greece was characterized by a very long and cold winter. In medium altitudes (above 500 m) snow remained until the late March. On April 7th there was snowfall with at least 20 cm snow in fruit farming areas east of Edhessa and 5 cm on the coast line in Nea Moudhania southern of Thessaloniki. Because of these weather conditions we had to change our planned collection area and routes and have mainly collected in lower areas of Nomos Halkidhiki and Nomos Thessaloniki. In October we continued our collection of autumn flowering species of 2002, starting in Nomos Ahaia and Ilias, crossing the centre of Peloponnese and following the coastline of Arkadhia, Lakonia and Messinia. Weather conditions in Octobre were good, mostly sunny with daily temperatures of 20-25 °C, morning temperatures of 11- 16 °, strong dewfall but nearly no rain. In contrary to autumn 2002 the composition of autumn flora was limited because of the long and very dry summer, nearly without any rain between April and October. Collection points of both excursions are shown by the following map based on our private access data base: Collecting route in 2003 3 As in the previous years we have planned our daily collection on base of 10 x 10 km- UTM-squares. Within these we selected typical topographical sites and biotopes and tried to collect all species flowering and fruiting as far as they had been identified by us. At second and third collection points within the same square we tried to avoid doublings. For drying we used again our standard technique, as we have published in "Phyton" 32 (1): 119-128; 1992. For 5-6 presses each of them containing 50-60 plant sheets we used a combination of C-line and B-line corrugated board in different successions. The thinner B-line material is garantueeing the stability of the board- packaging, the broader C-line board (ca. 3-3,5 mm) is responsible for the necessary air exhaust. Use of C-line board only would reduce the number of plant sheets per package and increase the temperature within the package, sometimes causing negative impact to the dried plants quality. In case of missing blossing paper the plant material can be put in a double line of news-paper without any loss of quality. It is very usefull to open the presses after 8-10 hours (before breakfast in the morning, but with a good coup of coffee) and to select all fully dried material and to take out all blossing paper. Under normal conditions 30-50 % of all plants are fully dried at that time and could be influenced negatively if they would be left in the drying process. On the other hand the the number of remaining presses are significantly reduced and drying process of remaining plants will be improved. After 24 hours drying only 1-2 % of plants will remain within the drying process. Change of wet newspaper is not necessary. It has proved positively to underlay and to cover the flowers of some species like Papaver, Glaucium, Helianthemum, Verbascum, Linum with one line of tissue. These tissues should be removed after 8-10 hours drying (not really necessary for Papaver and Rosa). Time consumption for the morning inspection is in the range of 15-20 minutes for each press. Time consumption in the evening for distributing the plant sheets between the corrugated board and arranging the whole presses is 30 until 45 minutes for six presses. All plants are mounted and, as far as possible, determined by ourselves. The determination helps us very much to improve the collection process. Though we are no botanists we try to determine the plants at least until level of genus including all failures an amateur is able to do. We hope to minimize determination mistakes as far as possible and hope that all users will excuse our poor knowledge. For our own quality control it is very important that our plant sheet will be gone through, confirmed or corrected by specialists. Determined species are added to our access data-base and finally delivered to the herbarium of the Botanical Museum Berlin-Dahlem. Here they are waiting for the neccessary scientific assessment. 4 2.
