TELEPHONE: CIRCLE 5-8900 FQR RELEASE: Saturday, June 10, 1961 MODERN AMERICAN DRAWINGS, an exhibition prepared by the Department of Circulating Ex­ hibitions of The Museum of Modern Art, New York, under the auspices of the Interna­ tional Council of the Museum, will be inaugurated at the 1961 "Festival of Two Worlds" in Spoleto, Italy. Opening June 15, the exhibition will remain on view for the dura­ tion of the Festival, closing July 16. The galleries in which the drawings will be displayed are on the main floor of the Palazzo Ancalani on the Piazza della Liberta. After its showing in Spoleto, the proposed itinerary of the exhibition includes Israel Greece, Scandinavia, Germany, France and England* Selected by William S. Lieberman, Curator of Drawings and Prints at the Museum, and Miss Elaine Johnson, Assistant Curator, the exhibition comprises seventy-three works by forty-four artists, chosen to reflect the richness and variety of American art in the drawing medium during the last twenty years* The distinguished older generation of draftsmen is represented by such artists as Lyonel Feininger, Arshile Gorky, Yasuo Kuniyoshi, Jackson Pollock and Ben Shahn, who themselves range in style from romantic realism to abstract expressionism* Jasper Johns, James McGarrell and Larry Rivers testify to the vigor of new directions taken by the younger generation* Other artists included in the exhibition are Hyman Bloom, Fritz Glarner, Philip Guston, Franz Kline, WiUem de Kooning, Jack Levine, Loren Madver, and Andrew Wyeth* The exhibition was organized in response to a number of requests from European and Israeli museums* These requests were stimulated in great part by the enthusiastic reception tendered to earlier shows of American painting and sculpture touring Europe between 195^ and I960* The desire was then created for an exhibition of drawings of comparable quality which would reveal the basis for the most significant accomplish­ ments of contemporary American art* For many institutions in these countries Modern American Drawings will be the first exhibition presenting American art of the present* Twenty-five private collectors, 10 galleries,and 5 museums and institutions have lent works to the exhibition* The "Festival of Two Worlds" was founded by Gian Carlo Menotti in 1958* Modern American Drawings will be the only part of the Festival devoted to the graphic arts; other events are devoted to music, the dance and drama* The International Council of The Museum of Modern Art, the sponsoring organiza­ tion under whose auspices Modern American Drawings will be shown, is a non-profit membership organization, composed of art patrons and community leaders from many parte of the United States* Among the exhibitions which will be organized for showing abror during the next year under the sponsorship of the Council will bo one-man shows of Leonard Baskln, Mark Rothko and Ben Shahn, Visionary Architecture and the U* S* Representation at the VI Sfio Paulo Bienal* ft***********.********************.*********** t •« •." . >•••.'.*.. •-••' • -..• ?or additional information and photographs contact Elizabeth Shaw, Publicity Director, Museum, of Modern Art, U West 55 Street, New York 19, N.
