Today tOllr distinct schools are recognised of the work. The better examples of the craft available today reveal a high degree of excellence both as regards material and craftsmanship. The work consists of embroidering multi-coloured beads into various designs either on finished products of domestic use or on household furnishings and apparel, including the apparel of domestic animals. A study of the designs used shows the influence of other arts such as embroidery, tie and dye, the rural plastic arts and even such unusual source as memorial stones. The motifs consist of divine or human figures, flora and fauna and purely geometric forms. The composite motif on this volume consists of two pieces of Pachhitpati and two Chaklas. The former is usually a decorative scroll generally used as a wall-hanging above a door, window, alcove or shelf. The lutter is generally used as a dewration piece and spread on a Patla or Bajoth (low table). Both demonstrate the panelled mode where the central theme is contained in boxed frames surrounded by one or more borders. (Block from an ink tracing by K. D. Vaishnav.
