Technology leader Miba As a technology leader, Miba Friction Group constantly strives for new and improved products. Our R&D center at the Roitham (A) site relies on advanced R&D equipment which includes labs for developing and analyzing metallic and composite friction materials, as well as the latest component and system testing equipment for wet- and dry-running applications. They are adjustable to simulate customer test procedures. In our test center we are able to simulate temperatures of -20°C and carry out analysis using our self-developed Noise-Vibration-Harshness (NVH) test bench to optimize systems like axles or transmissions. We are engaged in fundamental research in cooperation with international research centers and universities. The development and testing of our products is performed in close collaboration with our customers. Highest quality of our friction materials is top priority for us. Our comprehensive quality assurance methods guarantee high levels of product and process quality for both small and large batches. All our production sites operate based on a modern Total Quality Management system. 5 3. Corporate philosophy of Miba Friction Group Miba has been a development partner and supplier of high-performance friction linings to the international automotive and machine industry for almost 40 years. Friction linings are the decisive performance ele- ments in clutches and brakes for vehicles and machinery and make a substantial contribution to improving effi ciency. Our customers benefi t from optimized components for clutch and brake systems. Our use of high-quality materials and innovative processes give our products excellent tribological properties and high wear resistance. Miba Friction Group has the right product for every application, from high-performan- ce friction linings for dry-running and wet-running applications through mating discs right down to ready to install disc sets. Leading companies all over the world rely on the quality of Miba Friction Group products. 4. Friction linings for the most demanding applications Miba friction linings offer superior performance in clutches and brakes and deliver higher power density in axles and transmissions than standard products. They are used by demanding manufacturers in construc- tion machinery, tractors, cars, trucks, high speed trains, motorcycles, airplanes, and wind power plants. Miba friction materials are developed in-house specifi cally for wet-running and dry-running applications. Depending on the specifi cation, the possible surface types range from carbon through fi ber composites and molybdenum to sintered friction linings. Discs are fundamental to any clutch, providing the necessary frictional connection for starting and changing gear. Fiber composite friction discs and steel mating discs are used in wet-running powershift transmissi- ons for agricultural and construction machines. Sintered discs facilitate effi cient torque transfer even under high ener- gy loads, such as in tractor brakes. They are characterized by particularly high temperature resistance and low wear. Its exceedingly high wear resistance, long service life and unusually high pressure resistance make molybdenum linings the material of choice for high-performance limited-slip differentials. 6 5. Friction materials of Miba Friction Group 5.1 Fiber Composite Fiber composite is a friction material structured from natural and artifi cial fi - bers and fi ller materials which are hardened using a specially developed resin binder. The combination of special fi bers and fi ller materials, paired with an innovative manufacturing process, results in an effi cient friction material with a specifi c porosity. This guarantees excellent energy capacities, heat resistan- ce and reduced wear. Our fi ber composite friction materials have a very low hot spot tendency due to their favorable porosity and elasticity. Fields of application Fiber Composite friction linings are especially developed for wet-running ap- plications. Typical applications include: • Power shift transmissions • PTOs • Forward and reverse clutches for use in construction and mining machinery, agri- cultural machinery, buses, trucks and other heavy duty applications Special properties include: • Low tendency to hot spots on mating discs • High friction coeffi cient • Low-noise oscillation-resistant operation 5.2 Carbon Composite Carbon composite is a friction material based on a composite with an advan- ced structure of high-temperature resistant fi ller materials, fi bers and bin- ders. With a similar structure to fi ber composite materials, the extra carbon fi bers enhance its heat-discharge and heat-resistance pro- perties. Carbon composite friction materials are very durable, with a low level of wear and a very constant friction coeffi cient. Fields of application Carbon Composites are especially developed for slow, wet-running clutches: • Axle differentials • Central differentials • Transfer clutches • Off-highway applications that need high controllability Carbon Composite friction linings have also proved extremely successful in a number of applications where ordinary Fiber Composite linings are not suf- fi cient. Such systems operate under high pressures and demand friction materi- als with the following properties: • Heat resistance • Silent running • Stable friction coeffi cient at a variety of pressures, speeds and oil temperatures • Long service life 7 The close relationship between static and dynamic friction coeffi cients, plus coeffi cients that remain constant or even increase with speed (depending on the oil), reduces vibration and minimizes noise and oscillation. 5.3 Sprinkled Sinter In the sintering process, the mixed metal powder is sprinkled mechanically onto the base material. This automated process ensures a very low level of production-related deviations. The powder mixture is then heated in a cont- inuous furnace to a temperature below its melting point, whereby it solidi- fi es and bonds permanently to the core material. The subsequent pressing process ensures that the discs are parallel and fl at and applies additional modifi cations such as grooves. Sinter friction linings are the classic type of friction materials, with temperature and wear resistance offering consider- able advantages. The basic materials for Miba Friction Group’s sinter friction linings are matrices of copper, bronze (copper-tin alloy), brass (copper zinc) or iron with admixtures of non-sintering substances such as graphite, silicates and nitrides. Fields of application Typical applications for sintered linings include: • Locking differential discs • Brake discs • Heavy-duty clutch discs for machinery, tractors and military vehicles They have: • Extremely good continuous slip behaviour • High wear resistance • Constant friction coeffi cient • High stiffness • Unusually high temperature resistance 5.4 Steel discs The function of steel discs and the corresponding mating discs is achieved by using different hardening and surfacing processes and geared to the relevant friction lining. 8 Content
