Brazilian Directory of Independent Publishers 2016–2017 Libre The Brazilian Publishing Houses League – Libre (Liga Brasileira de Editoras) works as a network of independent publishers to collaboratively increase our business, strengthen the editorial market and increase bibliodiversity. It is a nonprofit association for public interest, free and independent from political parties, public or governmental entities. Since its founding in august 2002, it represents independent publishing houses from all over Brazil. The league has as mission to preserve bibliodiversity within Brazilian editorial market, promoting independent publishing. As it works as a collaborative publishers network, it is able to reflect and to act toward enlarging readers’ audience, supporting independent companies and establishing public policies regarding books and reading. Since its foundation, Libre is becoming more important as a constant presence at public debates on books, along with other representative entities of the book trade, in Brazil and abroad. It has increased its associated member’s presence in fairs, organizing collective stands and special subscription conditions, especially on international fairs at Frankfurt (Germany), Paris and Montpelier (France) and Buenos Aires (Argentina) and locally on book fairs as Bienal do Livro, Feira Panamazônica and Ribeirão Preto. Libre is closely engaged on discussions regarding the procedures that regulate governmental programs directed towards choosing and acquiring books, in order to contribute to more transparent, ample and efficient programs. This effort has resulted in combined participation of associated publishing houses in public competitions set by the Federal Government for supplying the School Library’s National Program (Programa Nacional Biblioteca na Escola – pnbe). Concerning marketing, Libre is constantly looking for innovation on the book distribution system in Brazil, along with solutions to a more effective insertion of associated publishing houses on Brazilian most important bookstores.
