We ask all students and parents to read through this handbook thoroughly making note of the schoolʻs policies, procedures, and opportunities contained therein. With this knowledge, we expect that students and parents follow these guidelines and respect the schoolʻs determination as to how these guidelines may or may not affect you directly. While we anticipate that most incidents that occur throughout the school year will fall under a section or sections of this handbook, we may also take license to make decisions on a case by case basis as is appropriate. Due to the nature of the global pandemic, this student/parent handbook acts as a living document that will continue to be updated as conditions change throughout the 2021-2022 school year. Should updates be made, all students and parents will be notified in a timely manner. Both students and parents should read through the handbook together and discuss the policies and procedures so that there is a clear understanding of the expectations of attending the University Laboratory School. By signing the Student/Parent Handbook Acknowledgement form, both parent and child agree to adhere to the statements, policies and procedures covered within the handbook. We hope the information presented is helpful and contributes to a successful school year. Our charter school serves two interlocking missions: to design and deliver the best possible education to our own students, and to serve the educational research and development community as a seedbed for innovation. As a school we are focused in part on supporting educational research and development, and disseminating educational materials and improvement strategies. To that end, we enroll a cross-section of students who reflect the ethnicity, socio-economic status, and school achievement levels of Hawaii's public school system. With heterogeneous classes, emphasis on innovation and research, and provision of ongoing professional development for in-service and pre-service educators, our school serves as an experimental site for teaching, learning, and assessment in grades K–12. Vision University Laboratory School’s vision is that all students will graduate ready for college, work, and responsible citizenship.
