William I Koch International Sea Scout Cup Media Guide Last Updated: July 2, 2018 Introduction The William I. Koch International Sea Scout Cup is a biannual Sailing Regatta put on by Sea Scouting (Boy Scouts of America). The Event was founded by Bill Koch in 2002 in order to allow Sea Scouts from around the world to compete. The original National Sea Scout Sailing Championship began in the 1930s but went dormant when Sea Scouts left the program to serve in World War II. Every two years Sea Scouts from around the world gather for a week of friendly competition. Scouts from Australia, Brazil, Denmark, Egypt, England, Finland, Germany, Ireland, Liberia, New Zealand, Norway, Poland, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, Sweden, Trinidad and Tobago, Turkey, and the United States have participated. History After nearly half a century since there was a Sea Scout National Sailing Competition, the Sea Scouts program asked Bill Koch if he would be interested in reviving the championship that had been dormant since World War II. Koch requested that the regatta be open to Scouts from around the world in order to foster international understanding and camaraderie. The Koch Cup Bill Koch president of the America³ Foundation, Inc. commissioned Asprey’s of London, the silversmith who made the original America's Cup trophy, to manufacture the William I. Koch International Sea Scout Cup. The trophy referred to as The Koch Cup is made of silver and stands thirty-four inches tall. America³ Foundation, Inc. transferred the Cup to the National Scouting Museum where it is on display when not on loan to the Koch Cup or the America³ Foundation, Inc. Kiwi Cup Teams Qualify on the first few days of the cup. Sea Scouts in the top half of the fleet qualify for the Koch Fleet and the rest qualify for the Kiwi Fleet. The Kiwi Cup was donated by the Sea Scouts of New Zealand in 2000. It is an authentic Maori carved statue that is presented to the winners of the Kiwi Fleet. 1 Previous Results Year Location Host Winner of Koch Cup Winner of Kiwi Cup Thomas Hartman 2002 Chicago, IL Columbia Yacht Club P Cotera and J Cotera and Trevor Gurley Massachusetts Maritime Trevor Gurley and Erling Guderud and Siri 2004 Buzzards Bay, MA Academy Corey Kemp Neslein Corey Kemp and Andrew Scheuermann 2006 Miami, FL Coral Reef Yacht Club John Harada and Danielle Meeker Eric Johnson and Levi 2008 Annapolis, MD United States Naval Academy Patrick Arlington White United States Coast Guard Cody Stansky and Barchan Rodgers and 2010 New London, CT Academy Andrew Britton Abby King Jack Donnell and Mathew Rozario and 2012 Vallejo, CA California Maritime Academy Brooke Stinson Colin Bartels Ben Brough and Andrew Berkowitz and 2014 Long Beach, CA Long Beach Yacht Club Laura Roudebush Isabella Rudrow Nicholas Gardiner Teagan Foley and Mick 2016 Long Beach, CA Long Beach Yacht Club and Nicholas Williams Foley 2018 Galveston, TX Sea Star Base Galveston Bill Koch with the 2016 Koch Cup Champions Nicholas Gardiner and Nicholas Williams from New Zealand. 2 William I. Koch Bill Koch’s relationship with the Sea Scout program pre-dates his career as a successful international businessman and winning America’s Cup skipper. It began more than 50 years ago when the Wichita, Kansas native enrolled in a summer sailing program at Culver Military Academy in Indiana. Modeled after the Sea Scout Program, Koch cites his early sailing experience as one that would alter the course of his life. “I learned then that the true art of sailing required teamwork, discipline and leadership,” he said. “If I could fine tune those skills, then I would be better able to manage the surprises that the sea constantly throws at you.” Koch has done a fine job of honing those skills. He graduated with honors from Culver Military Academy and received his bachelors, masters and doctoral degrees in chemical engineering from Massachusetts Institute of Technology. As the founder of the Oxbow Carbon LLC, the largest marketer and producer of petroleum and calcined coke in the world, Koch has created a business that Forbes Magazine consistently recognizes as one of the top privately held companies in America. Using some of the lessons learned from his life-long passion for the sea, Koch created his T3 philosophy – talent, teamwork and technology. Simply put, he encourages employee participation, rewards teamwork and relies on scientific research to make calculated risks. Koch used the T3 approach to win the 1992 America’s Cup, the most coveted prize in sailing. “Ordinary people doing things extraordinarily well as a team will beat – every time – a bunch of superstars with their accompanying egos,” he told his team of amateur sailors when the sailing experts had discounted them at the start of their America’s Cup campaign. Koch designed, built and created The William I. Koch International Sea Scout Cup to foster the lessons born out of the Sea Scout Program. The biannual regatta recognizes young adults who are willing to learn leadership through seamanship. 3 Contacts Regatta Chairman Mike Philbrook [email protected] National Director, Sea Scouts BSA Janice Downey [email protected] Regatta Race Officer Hugh Dougherty [email protected] Public Safety and Transportation JM Zimmerle [email protected] Regatta Registrar Noel E Guzman [email protected] Regatta Purser Lee Popham [email protected] Social Media Web Page: Http://seascoutcup.org Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/WilliamIKochInternationalSeaScoutCup/ Twitter: @seascoutcup Flickr: https://www.flickr.com/photos/75403029@N06/collections/ Vimeo: https://vimeo.com/user10199171 4 2018 Participant Facts Total participants: 64 44 from the United States and 20 from outside the United States Representing 10 different countries AUS-2, BRA-2, DNK-2, FIN-2, HKG-4, IRL-2, NZL-2, POL-2, USA-44, ZAF-2 From 17 different states: CA-4, FL-4, IL-2, MA-4, MD-3, MI-5, NJ-2, NY-4, NC-2 OH-2, TN-1, RI-2, TN-4, TX-4, VA-1, WA-2, WI-4 Gender: 18 Female, 46 Male Age: Age Number 15 5 16 17 17 12 18 16 19 9 20 5 Average age: 17 There are 11 competitors that competed in previous Koch Cups There are two teams that are made up of siblings USA 18, AUS 1 5 Race Schedule and Locations Racing will be Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday.
