DRAMATENwill present the United States premieres of three Ingmar Bergman productions: August Strindberg's Miss Julie (June 10, 11, 12), Eugene O'Neill's A Long Day's Journey Into Night (June 14, 15, 16) and Henrik Ibsen's A Doll's House (June 18, 19, 20). These productions unite two generation s of Bergman actors. Swedish film stars Bibi Andersson and Erland Josephson will join Bergman's new generation of actors represented by Lena Olin, Peter Stormare and Pernilla Ostergren in the most concentrated display of theater work ever presented outside of Sweden by the legendary film director. Bergman on Stage is presented by BAMas part of The New York International Festival of the Arts. All three productions will be performed in Swedish (simultaneous English translation will be available). Miss Julie, one of Strindberg's most intimate dramas, is about the daughter of a rich baron who becomes involved with her father's servant, and slowly looses her mind. ' Starring in the production is Swedish actress Lena Olin. She is known to American film audiences for her roles in The Unbearable Lightness of Being, Enemies: A Love Story, for which she received an Academy Award nomination, and most recently, Havana starring opposite Robert Redford. Ms. Olin has had a long asssociation with both Mr. Bergman and DRAMATEN. In 1977, she made her film debut in Bergman's Autumn Sonata . She went on to appear in Bergman's final film, Fanny and Alexander. In 1983 she had a substanial role in Bergman's television movie, After The Rehearsal. For DRAMATENshe has played Cordelia in Bergman's King Lear and also appeared in the Bergman production of A Dreamplay by August Strindberg. Starring opposite Ms. Olin is Peter Stormare, who will also be seen in Bergman's Long Day's Journey Into Night as the young Edmund. He will be the only member of DRAMATENto appear in two of the three productions. He made his New York stage debut at BAMwith DRAMATEN,starring in the Bergman production of Hamlet. He also directs productions for DRAMATEN,most recently Sam Shepard's Fool For Love. I Bergman On Stage at BAM -Page 2- As Dr. Rank in Ibsen's A Doll's House, Erland Josephson returns to BAMwhere he made his American stage debut with his highly acclaimed, Obie-award-winning performance as Gaev in Peter Brook's The Cherry Orchard. Pernilla Ostergren, who plays Nora, made her American stage debut as Ophelia in Bergman's Hamlet. Most recently she was seen in the TV movie, Den Goda Viljan (The Good Will), scripted by Ingmar Bergman and directed by Bille August, whom she recently married. The rest of the cast includes Per Mattsson as Torvald, Bjorn Granath as Krogstad, and Marie Richardson as Mrs. Linde. Stripping away many of the sentimental scenic elements of A Doll's House, Bergman sets his production on a raised platform, which is anchored in the center of the stage. Outside this square are placed rows of chairs, where the actors sit off stage, yet visible to the audience. DRAMATENpresented the world premiere of O'Neill's Long Day's Journey Into Night in February 1956. According to Carlotta O'Neill (the playwright's widow), the favorable reviews of DRAMATEN's production of A Moon for the Misbegotten in April 1953 reached O'Neill shortly before he died and influenced him to give DRAMATENpermission to present the world premieres of his last four plays: Long Day's Journey Into Night, A Touch of the Poet, Hughie and More Stately Mansions. These works were produced posthumously. The relationship between author and company stretched over 30 years, beginning in 1923 with their production of Anna Christie. In 1962 they toured the United States with the original production of Long Day's Journey Into Night performing at the Cort Theater on Broadway. The play has proven to be one of the greatest dramatic successes in the history of DRAMATEN. For the bicentennial season of DRAMATEN(1987/88), Ingmar Bergman was asked to direct the play, his first attempt at an O'Neill work. Heading the cast is the estimable, Bibi Andersson, in the role of drug addicted Mary Tyrone. She is know for her performances in the Bergman films Smiles of A Summer Night, The Seventh Seal, Wild Strawberries , The Face and Persona. One of her very first performance jobs was in an advertising film for the swedish soap Bris. The ad was directed by Ingmar Bergman. Also of interest is the connection between Jarl Kulle, the actor who plays James Tyrone, and the original 1956 production. In that version, Mr. Kulle played the young son Edmund. 35 years later, Mr. Kulle assumes what in life would be a natural progression, the role of the aged father James Tyrone . Filling Kulle's shoes in the role of Edmund is Peter Stormare, who won critical acclaim for his radical approach to the title role in the Bergman production of Hamlet.
