2007 Game Recaps April 29, 2007 ANTEATERS BEAT LONG BEACH STATE 15-10; FINISH SEVENTH AT MPSF CHAMPIONSHIP TEMPE, Ariz.-- The No. 9 seed UC Irvine women's water polo team (19-13) defeated Long Beach State15-10 Sunday in the seventh place match of the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Championship at Mona Plummer Aquatic Center. Sophomore Julia Fancher scored on each of UCI's first three shots of the match to get UCI out to a quick start with a 6-5 lead at the end of one period. The Anteaters built up a 9-6 lead at the half. Senior Robyn Kaake scored three of her four goals in the match in the second half to help seal the victory for the 'Eaters. The seventh place finish is the highest UC Irvine has ever finished at the MPSF Championship, the previous best was an eighth place in 2006. The win also gives UC Irvine two points in the Black & Blue Rivalry Series between the two schools tying the score at 25 points each. The Anteaters took a 4-3 at the half. San Diego State came back to outscore UCI 4-1 in the third period to take a 7-5 lead heading into the final period. The Anteaters came back to tie the match and send it to overtime by outscoring SDSU 3-1 in the fourth period. Stacy Werner scored the winning goal in the second overtime period. Sophomore Julia Fancher and senior Robyn Kaake each had two goals to lead UCI. Keeper Lauren Machanis had 15 saves for the 'Eaters. The Anteaters will face Long Beach State Sunday at 11:40 a.m. in the seventh-place match at Mona Plummer Aquatic Center. The Cardinal took a 7-0 lead to open up the match and built up to an 11-3 lead heading into the final period of play. Stanford would outscore the 'Eaters 6-2 in the final eight minutes to seal the victory. Koree Blyleven, Jacquelyn Gauthier and Katie Hansen each had three goals to lead Stanford. Sophomore Julia Fancher and senior Jackie Prine each had two goals for the Anteaters. The Anteaters will move into the consolation bracket and will face either No. 4 seed Hawaii or No. 5 seed San Diego State Saturday at 11:40 a.m. at Mona Plummer Aquatic Center. The Anteaters and Sun Devils played back and forth in the first half with neither team taking more than a one goal lead as ASU took a 7-6 lead into the half. The Sun Devils scored three goals to open the third period to take a 10-6 lead with 1:57 left in the third. The Anteaters then scored four unanswered goals tying the match at 10-10 with 4:45 left in the fourth period. ASU scored with 4:25 left in the period to take an 11-10 lead. UCI would then use goals from sophomore Julia Fancher, senior Robyn Kaake and sophomore Gianna Rossi to take a 13-11 lead with 2:17 remaining. The Sun Devils would cut the lead to 13-12 with 1:25 left, but would be unable to catch the Anteaters. Robyn Kaake scored four goals total, including three goals in the fourth period to lead UCI. With the four goals, Kaake moves into first place all-time at UCI in goals scored with 211. The Anteaters will face No. 1 Stanford Friday ta 11:20 a.m. in the quarterfinals of the MPSF Championship. The Lions took a 2-0 lead 1:36 into the match following a goal by Nicole Hughes. The Anteaters came back to tie the match at 2-2 as sophomore Julia Fancher scored on a power play goal with one second left in the opening period. Dora Szabolcsi put LMU up 3-2 48 seconds into the second period. Junior Alli Russell and senior Jackie Prine then would score a pair of goals to put UCI up 4-3 with 2:42 left in the second period. Cara Colton tied the match at 4-4 with 2:33 left in the second on a lob shot over the keeper. Jackie Prine put UCI back on top 5-4 with 59 seconds left in the opening half. LMU then went on a 5-0 run to take a 9-5 lead with 3:16 left in the third period. Alli Russell scored her, career high, third goal of the match to get UCI within 9-6 with 1:06 left in the third. Cara Colton gave the Lions a 10-6 lead with 46 second left. Trailing by four goals heading into the fourth period, the Anteaters scored three unanswered goals to start the period including two by senior Robyn Kaake. Dora Szabolcsi stopped the UCI comeback as she scored her second goal of the match with 1:15 remaining to put LMU up 11-9. Junior keeper Lauren Machanis had five saves in the match for UCI. Keeper Kaylee Caster had nine saves for the Lions. The Anteaters will next compete at the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Championship in Tempe, Ariz. as the No. 9 seed. The team will open the tournament Thursday, May 26th at 3:20 p.m. at Mona Plummer Aquatic Center against the yet to be determined No. 8 seed. The match was a part of the Black & Blue Rivalry series between the two schools. Senior Jackie Prine gave UCI a 1-0 lead 1:05 into the match. Megan Wichell tied the match 40 seconds later on a power play goal. Prine regained the lead for UCI as she scored again with 4:43 left in the first period. The Anteaters would build a 4-1 lead before alternating goals with the 49ers as UCI took a 6-3 lead with 4:24 remaining in the second period. The 'Eaters then would score four unanswered goals to take a 10-3 lead with 4:46 left in the third period. The two teams would alternate goals as Long Beach State cut the lead to 13-7 with 1:47 left. Marina Canetti added a final goal with 43 seconds left to get the final score of 13-8. Jackie Prine led UCI with four goals. Megan Winchell scored four for the 49ers. Junior keeper Lauren Machanis had 13 saves for UCI. Kim Hayes had 12 saves for Long Beach State. The Anteaters conclude the regular season Friday night as they host Loyola Marymount at 7:00 p.m.
