Michel Bastos restored the home team's advantage in the 32nd minute, however, and Lisandro – who, along with Sidney Govou is suspended for the second leg after both collected late bookings – made it 3-1 from the penalty spot 13 minutes from time after Matthieu Chalmé had handled Aly Cissokho's shot. • Whatever the outcome, France is guaranteed its first UEFA Champions League semi-finalist since AS Monaco FC in 2004. Previous meetings • Bordeaux emerged 1-0 winners from the clubs' last Ligue 1 encounter at the Stade Chaban-Delmas on 19 April last year. Alou Diarra scored the decisive goal after 43 minutes. • The teams will meet again in Bordeaux on 17 April for a return league fixture following the French champions' 1-0 victory in Lyon on 13 December. Chamakh was the match-winner that day. • The pair's overall head-to-head record in the French top flight could hardly be closer: Bordeaux have 32 wins and Lyon 31 with 26 draws. The record between them in Ligue 1 matches in Bordeaux is 20 wins for Les Marine et Blanc, ten for OL and 14 draws. In 1972/73, Lyon prevailed 4-3 on aggregate (3-0 at home, 1-3 away) in the last 16 en route to winning the trophy again. • Bordeaux have won two of the clubs' three French League Cup meetings, notably in the 2007 final decided by Henrique's 89th-minute header. • Les Marine et Blanc defeated Lyon 4-2 on penalties after a 1-1 draw in the last 16 of the 2001/02 competition, which they eventually won. That avenged a 1-0 win for Lyon at the same stage in 2000. Match background • Bordeaux's aforementioned home form has brought them four straight wins and just two goals conceded. They are unbeaten in seven home games overall in UEFA competition stretching back to October 2008. • This is Bordeaux's first quarter-final in Europe's elite club competition since the 1980s. In 1984/85 they defeated FC Dnipro Dnipropetrovsk on penalties after a 2-2 aggregate draw to reach their only semi-final, where they suffered an overall 3-2 reverse against eventual champions Juventus. • Les Girondins returned to the last eight in 1987/88 but went out on away goals after a 1-1 aggregate draw against a PSV Eindhoven side who went on to win the trophy. • In the intervening years Bordeaux have contested three UEFA Cup quarter-finals, most recently in 2003/04 when again they lost to the eventual winners, Valencia CF. • Bordeaux have a 50% success rate when faced with the task of overturning a two-goal deficit in UEFA's club competitions: RSC Anderlecht, 2002/03 UEFA Cup third round – lost (0-2 h, 2-2 a) AC Milan, 1995/96 UEFA Cup quarter-finals – won (0-2 a, 3-0 h) FC Bayern München, 1995/96 UEFA Cup final – lost (0-2 h, 1-3 a) FC Carl Zeiss Jena, 1982/83 UEFA Cup first round – won (1-3 a, 5-0 h) • Bordeaux went one better the round after beating Jena in the 1982/83 UEFA Cup, overcoming HNK Hajduk Split 4-0 in the second leg after a 4-1 away reverse. • While this is Bordeaux's first European tie against a compatriot club, Lyon beat Montpellier Hérault SC home (3-2) and away (1-0) in the 1997 UEFA Intertoto Cup final. • Lyon are seeking their first appearance in the last four of the UEFA Champions League having fallen at this hurdle in 2003/04, 2004/05 and 2005/06. • They can take confidence from their fine away record in this season's UEFA Champions League. The qualifying victory at RSC Anderlecht included they have recorded three victories, one draw and one defeat. • Lyon have been consistently good travellers in the UEFA Champions League over the past five seasons. They have played 22 away matches in this time and won 12 of them, losing just five. Team ties • Visiting coach Claude Puel has faced French opposition before in Europe. His previous experience came with LOSC Lille Métropole in the 2004/05 UEFA Cup when Les Dogues went down 1-0 on aggregate to AJ Auxerre in the round of 16, paying the price for a narrow first-leg home loss. • Jean II Makoun and Mathieu Bodmer were in Lille's squad for that tie alongside Chalmé. Another Bordeaux player, Michaël Ciani, featured for the opposition. • Bordeaux coach Blanc was captain of the Olympique de Marseille team that defeated Monaco in the third round of the 1998/99 UEFA Cup. Puel was then an assistant of Monaco coach Jean Tigana, whom he replaced at the helm soon after. • Puel coached Bordeaux's Franck Jurietti at Monaco during 2000/01. • As a player Blanc appeared for Manchester United FC against French side Nantes Atlantique FC in the 2001/02 UEFA Champions League second group stage – his United side drew 1-1 in France and won 5-1 at Old Trafford. • Lyon's Govou, Hugo Lloris, Anthony Réveillère and Jérémy Toulalan are colleagues of Bordeaux's Cédric Carasso, Ciani, Diarra and Yoann Gourcuff in the France national squad. • Diarra spent 2006/07 with Lyon, making 15 Ligue 1 appearances and scoring one goal. • Of Bordeaux's Brazilian contingent, Henrique, Jussiê and Wendel can face compatriots Cris and Michel Bastos. Yoan Gouffran and Bodmer were in the same SM Caen squad in 2002/03, although they never played together. • Bernard Lacombe, Les Gones' presidential adviser and a former French international striker, played for both Lyon (1969-78) and Bordeaux (1979-87). • France coach Raymond Domenech has also played for both sides. He won the French Cup with hometown club Lyon in 1973 and the French title with Bordeaux in 1984. • Bordeaux's penalty shoot-out record in UEFA club competitions is: 5-6 v 1.
