Inspired by the real-life memoirs of one of Scotland's first policemen, the fictional James McLevy prowls the dark streets of s Edinburgh bringing criminals to justice, with the assistance of Constable Mulholland. New Year's Day - and through the misty streets of Victorian Edinburgh, an elegant female figure walks the cobblestones with a certain vengeful purpose. Jean Brash, the mistress of the Just Land, brings her cool intelligence to solving a murder, a murder that took place in her own bawdy house the best in Edinburgh and her pride and joy. A prominent judge, strangled and left dangling, could bring her whole life to ruin, and she didn't haul herself off the streets, up through low, dirty houses of pleasure and violent vicious men, to let that come to pass. London had Sherlock Holmes. The dark alleys of Edinburgh had Inspector McLevy. Known as the father of forensics and a likely influence on Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, real-life police inspector James McLevy is here reinvented by David Ashton in a thrilling mystery - the first in a series - set in dark, violent Victorian Edinburgh. In William Palmer was making pilgrimage to Canterbury. Unbeknown to him, his fellow pilgrim was the King of the Greyfolk. When William claimed that the church would eradicate belief in the Faerie world, he was cursed by the Faerie King and condemned to walk forever between the worlds of magic and of men. The first four series of the original BBC Radio 4 fantastical drama series set in a world almost, but not quite, like our own. Paul Hilton stars as William Palmer, the immortal, reluctant and unthanked hero protecting mankind from an enemy they resist believing in: the Grey Folk. Thrilling, dark and contemporary, the dramas are set in a recognisable present day but one haunted by the folktales of the British Isles: drowned villages, changeling children, werewolves and unruly nature spirits. The complete series of the thrilling mystery series. On sabbatical from the Franciscan order, Father Paolo Baldi is working as a philosophy lecturer in Dublin when his life takes an unexpected turn and he finds himself helping the police to solve crimes. Terminus finds her investigating the 'Lucky Charm' murders, as she searches for an elusive serial killer who haunts the railway station. In The Smithfield Murdersa grisly killing at London's famous meat market sparks another troubling investigation, while in The Net and the CanalEnfield and her team look into a series of mysterious murders along Regent's Park Canal. Leaves of the Dead presents her with a trio of inexplicable deaths in the British Library - could they be ritual murders? The complete series of off- beat thrillers about psychic detective Thomas Soutar, who uses his skills in police investigations. Set in Glasgow and featuring fantastic full casts, these unique police dramas star Robin Laing as Thomas Soutar. In the four-part serial Condition Purplea murdered prostitute is found in the heart of Glasgow's prosperous business quarter. Could a tattoo on her body hold the key to finding her killer? In Two Way Cutanother four-parter, a headless body without a speck of blood on it has the cops puzzled - and who was the strange figure that PC Hamilton saw running along by the canal? DI Trueman and DS Riley are reluctant partners in crime-fighting, paired up after high-flyer Trueman suffered a nervous breakdown that left him struggling to get McLevy: The Collected Editions: Series 7 & 8: 8 Episodes of the BBC Radio 4 Crime Drama Series on his feet. Josephine Daunt and Susan Dervish both worked for the Ministry of Defence during the Second World War, doing top-secret, highly dangerous espionage work. But in peacetime, they find themselves without a job and feeling useless. Determined to put their talents to good use, they decide to set up a detective agency, with the help of former private eye Bill Mackie. From their Covent Garden office, they handle a steady flow of business. Detective Inspector Gwen Danbury comes from a family of investigators. Her father was a policeman, and her mother Joan often discussed cases with him - on one occasion helping him to solve a tricky murder. Gwen already has a capable, efficient sidekick in the form of DS Henry Jacobs - but nevertheless, her mum insists on helping Gwen with her inquiries. DS Dave Brook is a long-serving, ducking-and-diving police officer who takes armed robberies and violent crime in his stride. How will Max cope with the mean streets of his new patch? Any additional comments? At its heart, McLevy is a very standard police procedural. The characters are the stereotypes we've seen a hundred times before: the brilliant detective who doesn't play by the rules but always gets results; his long-suffering boss; his unimaginative but doughty sidekick, and the whore-with-a-heart-of-gold who he flirts with. Where it manages to go beyond all these is in the way it's put McLevy: The Collected Editions: Series 7 & 8: 8 Episodes of the BBC Radio 4 Crime Drama Series. The Victorian Edinburgh setting is unusual enough, and beautifully-realised, but what really makes it stand out McLevy: The Collected Editions: Series 7 & 8: 8 Episodes of the BBC Radio 4 Crime Drama Series the writing and the performances. Brian Cox and Siobhan Redmond work beautifully together and apart and together with the rest of the cast have managed to keep me listening to this and its sequel for nearly twelve hours across the past couple of weeks. It's never dragged once, and the whole experience has been a delight. Yes, excellent stories, interesting characters and the interplay between them. Jean Brash's dogs chasing McLevy. Evokes the time and place, the Scottish accents help too! The stories have kept me listening for hours over the last weeks. The glimpse into the world at that time and the punishments meted out are a revelation. I have been listening to McLevy on the radio for years, but hearing it on audible allows me to hear all the subtle humour that is this twosome's banter. Love the the books and the programmes. I can't t wait for the most recent one to be available. This is a masterclass in both writing and acting. Think I am a little in love with this character. Loved this so much. Was sadden when finished then so excited to get more! Next chapter!!! Great performances and characters.
