Spawned in March 1991, inspired by the Balearic sounds of the Mediterranean club scene, Zouk set out with just one dancefloor, and slowly cultivated a cult following for it's cutting edge music policy. With so many different sub-genres of dance music springing up by the mid 90s, Zouk created 2 other rooms, Velvet Underground and Phuture, as outlets to provide an alternative sound to the main room. The magic of Zouk now encompasses four distinctly different clubs all within the Zouk compound - Velvet Underground, Phuture, The Wine Bar, and the Zouk main room. A weekend at the club now provides revellers a wide variety of sounds - from down tempo, funk and soul, to nu jazz and broken beats, deep house to progressive house, tech house to techno, hip hop to breaks. Coupled with the unique features of each room gives clubbers that ultimate Zouk experience. They say the strength of a club is in its resident DJs. The guys who spin in the club week in, week out, whose main job is to keep the dancefloor rocking at whatever cost. After 12 years of breaking new dance music to the Singapore audience, Zouk's resident DJs have steadily built up a reputation, both locally and internationally, to be the best the world has seen. Seven residents spin in three separate rooms in the Zouk complex, each crafting his own style and identity. Yet more importantly, they also work tightly together to meld the different genres of music into one cohesive signature, one that clubbers have grown to appreciate as a 'Zouk Culture'. How important are the Zouk resident DJs? Well, without them, Zouk would not be full of clued up clubbers who know the score. Many top DJs who have spun at Zouk helped to spread the good word about how appreciative and responsive the Zouk crowd is. This has in turn placed Singapore and Zouk on the global dance map. None of this would have been possible if the Zouk residents had not laid the proper foundation first. In line with the 'One World, One Music, One Tribe, One Dance' motto, this Rhythm Compilation series epitomizes the 'Zouk Culture', distinguishing the frequencies among the four clubs within the compound, mixed by Zouk's resident DJs. RHYTHM1 - The first double CD release of the series captures the pounding beats that rock the main room every weekend, and the poignant blend of organic elements that embodies the sexier sister club Velvet Underground. Mixed by 2 of the club's most established resident DJs - Aldrin and Jeremy Boon - at! in the true spirit of house music. All Rights Reserved, National Library Board, Singapore CD1 If Zouk has a musical ambassador, it's Aldrin. Since beginning his residency in '96, he's become Singapore's most internationally prominent DJ, flying the Zouk flag throughout the four corners of the world, garnering acclaim at every stop from press, punters and fellow DJs alike. AJdriri's global profile is bolstered by the reputation he commands on home turf - especially since Muzik cited him as "one of the world's finest residents". Prior to this, Aldrin's plaudit list was already nothing short of impressive, having begun the millennium as the first Asian to be Muzik's DJ of the Month and being named "a contender for Best New DJ" (February 2000); and credit for mixing the mag's "most on-form CD". All this, along with Danny Tenaglia singling him out as his future DJ hero (DJ Mag Top 100 poll), has propelled Aldrin onto the international platform. To top that, Aldrin has also been referred to as Asia's number one DJ to catch this summer in Ibiza (Muzik, July 2003). From slow, deep & dubby grooves, to vocals, to percussive and tribal rhythms, through tech house and techno - Aldrin blends them all into a journey that's representative of his distinct style. The cross section of styles that Aldrin plays is a dear example of how open-minded the Zouk crowd is. One Tribe. One Dance All Rights Reserved, National Library Board, Singapore All Rights Reserved, National Library Board, Singapore CD2 A stalwart with the club since day one, playing almost every sub genre of electronic music that has popped up since then, Jeremy Boon has evolved over time to become one of Singapore's most influential DJs, as well as a DJ to be reckoned with on the international scene. Rainer Truby has given the thumbs up for this man, and "Shit Hot" is how London maestro Gilles Peterson describes him. Taking up the residency of Velvet Underground in 1997, Velvet has been his playground ever since, a place where he has the opportunity not just to continue breaking new grounds, but also playing the kind of music that matters most. Choosing to educate clubbers not just in new forms of dance music, but exposing them to the roots of it, whether it be Afro, Latin, Funk, Soul and of course, Jazz, Jeremy frequently threads and crosses musical lines where most DJs would fear. He takes the gargantuan task of pushing the boundaries with the greatest of ease. At the helm of the Velvet decks, Jeremy has taken the Velvet crowd to such a musical level, only a few foreign DJs like Louie Vega and Joe Claussell, have been able to manage the Velvet audience.
