I can’t recall if I remember correctly or if I make stuff up! Stop laughing – if it doesn’t happen to you, it will. Just go down “memory” lane. Before the liturgical cycle was called “Ordinary Time” it was called…? “Alex, what is The Sundays after Pentecost.” Ding, ding, ding, give the contestant $600.00. Pentecost (being the day of the birth of the Church), marking the Sundays of the year after Pentecost is celebrating time after the birth of the Church, the [Holy] Spirit led Church throughout the world. There is nothing “Ordinary” about these weeks until the Feast of Christ The King. As Church, we are led by the gifts of the Holy Spirit: filled with wisdom, understanding, counsel, fortitude (courage), knowledge, piety, and awe and wonder (fear of the Lord) the Church is more alert to discern and ready to do the will of God. Practice this Truth; be converted to the ways of the Spirit. We are also led by the fruits of the Holy Spirit: charity, joy, peace, patience, benignity (gentle kindness), goodness, long-suffering (not easily provoked or continually patient under a difficulty), mildness, faith, modesty, continency (self-control), and chastity are the effects of the gifts of the Holy Spirit. It was the readings and prayers in a weekday Mass that got me reflecting on the Holy Spirit. Some strophes from Psalm 119 were prayed: “Give me discernment, that I may observe your law and keep it with all my heart. Incline my heart to your decrees and not to gain”. Then a passage from St. Matthew’s Gospel followed: “Beware of false prophets...By their fruits you will know them.” In prayer and at each Mass we receive the gifts and fruits of the Holy Spirit. Those gifts and fruits are to be used; they identify us as God’s holy Church. Receive and mentor others with the gifts and fruits of the Spirit. In prayer, discern the presence of the gifts of the Holy Spirit and use them to become the Holy Spirit led Church today. At Mass listen to and practice our common prayers: “Open (wide) our eyes to the needs of our brothers and sisters; inspire in us (compassionate) words and (merciful) actions to comfort those who labor and are burdened. Make us serve them truly, after the example of Christ and as his command (to love one another). And may your Church stand as a living witness to truth and freedom, to peace and justice, that all people may be raised up to a new hope. (Eucharistic Prayer IV for Various Needs: “Jesus Who Went About Doing Good” parenthesis and added words are my own.) May the readings and prayers of these days after Pentecost fill you with the gifts and fruits of the Holy Spirit. Together we will become the Church of the Holy Spirit raising all people up to a new hope. St. Juliana Faith Formation staff is offering many opportunities. Vacation Bible School, July 15-19 is perfect for youngsters. Our School of Religious Education, First Communion, and Confirmation classes are being formed. The Steubenville experience in San Diego has open registration. RCIA is looking for folks who wish to become Catholic or complete their initiation into our faith. Information will be found in this bulletin. Three Sundays of faith, family, and food – with speakers Bishop Tim Freyer and Fr. Monty Williams, SJ are scheduled for you. Bishop Tim Freyer will be our guest on Sunday, July 14 – THIS IS A CHANGE OF DATE. He will inform us on the Diocese of Orange and the new cathedral, Christ Cathedral. A Jesuit from Toronto, Fr. Monty Williams, SJ will be with us on July 28 and August 4. You need not attend the Sunday 5:00PM Mass to be included for dinner and the talk.
