The island has been a pilot site for many innovative projects which have taken place on the island during the last three decades 1982 - The first Wind Park in Europe (5x20kW) 1983 - 100 kWp PV system with Battery storage (400kWh) 1989 - Replacement of the wind turbines (5x33kW) 1992 - Inverters in the PV system 1998 - The new Vestas 500kW wind turbine 2000 - Operation of a fully automated power system with 500kW battery storage and a 500kW Wind Turbine 2001 - Operation of a Microgrid electrifying 12 houses with intelligent autonomous Load Control 6 Kythnos Innovative Projects (2) Kythnos Microgrid in Gaidouromantra, consists of 12 houses with PVs and Batteries (52 kWh), 9 kVA Diesel (only back-up), flexible loads (1-2 kW irrigation pumps) and Intelligent Load Controllers. 7 Ikaria Hybrid Energy Project Hydro Electric and Wind power Two hydro power plants (1 MW & 3 MW) with two reservoirs that exploit water that comes from a dam One wind park (2,7 MW) which provides energy to the water pumps (3 MW) Guaranteed power: 2,55 MW 5-year Average Peak Demand: 7,3 MW It is expected that the Hybrid plant will cover 30% of the energy needs of the island. The project is already in trial operation and it is expected to be fully operational by the end of 2019 8 Agios Efstratios “Green Island” project Small island in the North–East part of the Aegean Sea, with only 270 inhabitants (2011) and its 5-year Average Peak Demand 0,32 MW. The project includes two subprojects o a Hybrid power station (HPS) o a District Heating system (teleheating) The HPS consists of: o Wind turbines (900 kW), o PVs (150 kW) & Batteries (2,5 MWh), Law 4495/2018 authorizes the Ministry of Energy, The target of the project is to accomplish 85% RAE and HEDNO to take all necessary actions for energy of the island to come from RES. the implementation of this project. The project is funded by the EU, it is run by the CRES and it is still under study. 9 “Smart Island” pilot projects (1) Law 4495/2017 & Law 4546/2018 authorize the Ministry of Energy, RAE and HEDNO to take all necessary actions for the implementation of “Smart Island” pilot projects in 3 Greek islands. Each pilot project will consist of new RES units in combination with storage units controlled by a smart management system. The targets o RES penetration increase, o ensure the supply of demand, o secure operation of the power systems in a cost efficient way The “Smart Island” pilot projects will be implemented by investors who will have to participate in tenders held by the Regulatory Authority for Energy. The desired starting year of the full operation of the first “Smart island” pilot project is 2021. 10 “Smart Island” pilot projects (2) The selected islands are: Symi Astypalea Megisti/Kastelorizo Based on the following criteria: • Size • Installed RES • Operational Cost • RES penetration • Future Interconnection scenarios 11 TILOS project Technology Innovation for the Local Scale, Optimum Integration of Battery Energy Storage Horizon 2020 EU funded project (Feb. 2015 – Jan. 2019) Tilos island (area of 62 km2, 500 inhabitants, 2 main villages) is: o Geographically located in the Dodecanese island complex o Electrically interconnected with Kos-Kalymnos ES (a 9 islands ES) with submarine cables o 5-year Average Peak Demand: ~1MW TILOS project comprises: o Development of a smart microgrid in Tilos island o Development and operation of a prototype Hybrid Power Station (1st in Mediterranean sea) based on: o NaNiCl2 batteries (2,4MWh) o Wind turbines (800 kW) and PVs (160 kWp) o Smart metering installation in almost all households o Demand-side management platform implementation o Development of an Island high-level energy management system (HL-EMS) to supervise and control all island energy resources TILOS project (HPS) has already started its trial operation and is expected to be in full operation in a few months 12 TILOS project Technology Innovation for the Local Scale, Optimum Integration of Battery Energy Storage Main objectives of TILOS project: o Energy autonomy and reduction in oil consumption 70-75% per year o Maximization of RES penetration o Ancillary services to the ES of Kos-Kalymnos o Export Guaranteed energy o Implementation of advanced microgrid energy management techniques o Implementation of innovative demand management techniques o Troubleshoot of Tilos island electrification problems The TILOS project won two European Sustainable Energy Week (EUSEW) Awards in Brussels in 2017. The first ever Energy Islands award and the Citizen’s Award. Tilos HPS guaranteed energy & power are 2,0 MWh and 0,4 MW, respectively Tilos HPS has started its trial operation in autumn of 2018. 13 TILOS project Technology Innovation for the Local Scale, Optimum Integration of Battery Energy Storage Thirteen (13) partners from all over Europe 14 The microgrid of TILOS 15 The Hybrid Power Station of TILOS Overview WP 800kW Battery Storage System 2,88MWh Annual energy production 2 battery containers of NaNiCI2 Zebra (FZSoNick ) ≈ 2,1GWh (70% of Tilos demand) 2 power converters of 450kW (Indrivetec FlexConvert) PV 160kWp - 592 PV panels of 270Wp - 8 Inverters Fronius. - Annual energy production ≈ 265MWh (9% of Tilos demand) SCADA of the HPS - Management of HPS energy resources - Dispatch set-points to RES units and BSS Kos SCADA Local SCADA of HEDNO - Communication of HPS SCADA with Kos SCADA - HPS management by HEDNO 16 The Hybrid Power Station of TILOS RES Units Installation 17 The Hybrid Power Station of TILOS Battery Storage System installation 18 Measurements & forecasting models 19 Smart meters installation Livadia Village Megalo Chorio Village Megalo Chorio Livadia 20 Population engagement 21 Communication infrastructure 22 TILOS High Level Energy Management System (HL-EMS) Remote Control Switches Tilos High Level Diesel SCADA-EMS Island EMS Genset Server HPS Local Power Station DSM Server Demand-side Management 23 HEDNO role HPS Licensing & Contractual Agreements Connection Agreement Αρ.
