At the foothills of the Shivalik range of the Himalayas, a new IIT has been set up in approximately 400 acres in Jagti, a forest area near Jammu City at NH 44. A transit campus has been built at the permanent location to facilitate the activities of the Institute, this will extend to the main campus in the coming years. The transit campus, operational from August 2017, is equipped to meet all the needs of the students and faculty with 18 classrooms, 15 laboratories, modern hostel buildings for girls and boys and sports facilities. All advanced types of lab equipment with other amenities are available within the campus at Jagti. The Central Instrumentation Facility (CIF) to cater higher-end equipments in Science and Engineering are proposed and procured to be operated from Paloura campus, Jammu. The state-of-the-art High Performance Computing (HPC) will become operational by Oct-Nov 2020 in the transit campus at Jagti. IIT Jammu has campus-wide WiFi and 1 gbps internet connectivity. IIT Jammu is set to create a learning environment which will match the majesty of the Himalayas, the beauty of Kashmir and the serenity of the town of Jammu. IIT Jammu is getting perpetual support from the IIT system. B.Tech. in Chemical Engineering 2. B.Tech. in Civil Engineering 3. B.Tech. in Computer Science and Engineering 4. B.Tech. in Electrical Engineering 5. B.Tech. in Materials Engineering 6. B.Tech. in Mechanical Engineering Apart from these, IIT Jammu offers Ph. D. in Chemistry, Civil Engineering, Computer Science and Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Humanities and Social Science, Materials Engineering, Mathematics, Mechanical Engineering, and Physics. Institute also offers M. Tech. with a specialization in Data Science, Information Security (Computer Science and Engineering), Communications and Signal Processing (Electrical Engineering), Tunnel Engineering (Civil Engineering), and Thermal Engineering (Mechanical Engineering). Philosophy: The curriculum has been structured to be inter-disciplinary and hands-on in nature to cater to the rapidly changing scientific /technological needs of the global community. Research focus and Job-market requirements in the current era have been cutting across all disciplines (eg: Bio-engineering, IoT, AI, Data Science, Smart Cities, Energy for Future, Health Care, Functional and Interactive Devices, Advanced Materials for Innovative Applications to advance our life quality, Smart Manufacturing, Smart Cities, Water Resources, Climate Change, etc.). In such a scenario it is essential that we make flexible and permeable boundaries between various engineering disciplines’ and programs offered in the Institution. At the same time, we aim to maintain the core flavors of the programs. Engineering is all about solving real-life problems using the sound knowledge of Mathematics and Sciences. And these smart solutions are cutting across boundaries of conventional engineering disciplines, and do require a proper understanding of the way our society functions and its cultural ethos, interpersonal skills, behavioral patterns, humanistic management, etc. The design of IIT Jammu academic curriculum is based on the fundamental premise that the students are coming in the programs to learn, to innovate, and to solve the interdisciplinary issues that we need to address by evolving novel engineering system design. The IIT Jammu programs shall target for broad expectations from Bachelor’s education in engineering to: (a) Impart knowledge of engineering and science fundamentals to encourage critical thinking. It will be done in consonance with humanistic and societal needs. Through the structure of our proposed programs, we would encourage the creative design of engineering systems with a connect to National perspective. (b) Develop sound fundamentals, and technical and soft skills, to enable to relearn in future. (c) Inculcate professional and ethical conduct. (d) IIT Jammu would like to position itself as an active Lab of engineering education. Our programs shall aim to create value through entrepreneurial effort. (e) The courses in the programs shall be targeted to “uncover the cores, rather than covering everything”. This approach shall form the basis for innovation. Implementation: 4 -year undergraduate Bachelors’ Program has been designed to cater to fulfill the course requirements of a particular program as well as to expose students to the important and fundamental concepts of all branches of engineering, basic sciences, and humanities. Emphasis has been laid to devote a substantial portion of the total credits to experimental education through laboratory experiments and hands-on projects permeating across disciplines. Engineering and basic sciences courses are accompanied by the corresponding lab training in addition to various projects which will be taken up by the students. Engineering education has been incorporated in the academic curriculum from the first semester itself to introduce, excite and encourage students and to open avenues for each student to experiment and execute their ideas as they are full of energy and curiosity after their school education. Out-reach projects to provide engineering/technical solutions to the practical problems faced by society are an integral part of the academic curriculum. Research components will be dispersed throughout the program. A concrete program giving equal importance to the core engineering subjects as well as Engineering Foundation, Essential basic and applied science foundation, HSS core, and Design Practicum has been proposed. Introduction to various branches of engineering gives them the flexibility to do interdisciplinary projects (like transport, systems development, integrated novel solutions, green energy, health care, waste management, fuel cells, and complex manufacturing, etc.) which will give them the freedom to harness their skills in any discipline. Students are encouraged to get a minor degree in any area of engineering/applied sciences/humanities to fulfill their inter-discipline interests. The curriculum is also aiming to give a choice to focus and go deeper into an area of specialization. Student performance will be the main criteria to allow them to achieve these extra milestones. By obtaining the degree, students of IIT Jammu must be able to (i) Pursue higher studies in their domain / in any inter-disciplinary area. (ii) Adapt to the emerging trends in engineering / scientific / technological fields. (iii) Be a sensitive and responsible engineer, innovator, job creator, and human being. The academic curriculum has been proposed for a total of up to 135 credits plus 15 non-graded units. 12 extra credits will be required to be taken for pursuing additional Minor area degree/ Honors’ degree. Each credit is equivalent to 1-hour classroom teaching / 2 hours of laboratory training. It also requires 2-3 hrs of beyond classroom study per credit. Rules For Change Branch: There will be no provision of branch change in IIT Jammu curriculum. It is due to the provision of interdisciplinary nature of newly devised curriculum with a much wider common core encompassing many engineering disciplines flowing over to almost
