Celebrating 95 Years of Academic Excellence Schedule of Classes ~ Fall 2017 ~ Semester begins August 16 Denis Vasquez’s Year One Experience Alumni at a Glance Denis Vasquez has overcome many challenges in the past, the most prominent being a learning disability that he was diagnosed with at a young age. By working hard and seeking help from teachers after school, Denis was able to overcome these challenges and be part of his family’s first generation to attend college. Denis, who is a graduate of San Mateo High School, is in his first year at CSM and has already built up great momentum in a short period of time. Denis was able to get a head start at CSM during his senior year of high school by applying for a few CSM scholarships. He was thrilled when he learned he was awarded two scholarships that allowed him to attend CSM full-time. Only a semester and a half into college, Denis has quickly learned to take advantage of campus resources and is already finding success. He became involved with Year One, a program that helps first-year students transition smoothly from high school to college. Through Year One, Denis is able to obtain first-hand assistance on scholarship applications and can attend student success workshops that offer help with job-searching and resume preparation. This year’s cohort is enrolled in college success courses, which Denis is enjoying. He says, “These college success courses and Year One, on a whole, are great resources for first-year students to have access to, like student success workshops and Jeffrey D. Levine See “Year One Experience” on page 22 Former U.S. Ambassador CSM Alumnus Working Together: CSM Partners with Local High Schools CSM alumnus and retired United States Ambassador Jeffrey D. Levine will give this year’s commencement address. He was nominated to be the ambassador to Estonia by President Barack Obama in 2012 and served until 2015. Mr. Levine served as Deputy Chief of Mission/ Chargé d’Affaires at the U.S. Embassy in Budapest, Hungary from 2007–2010. In addition, he served as Deputy Chief of Mission in Sofia, Bulgaria and has also been posted to Brasilia, Brazil; Nicosia, Cyprus; Alexandria, Egypt; Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia; and Lima, Peru. Mr. Levine is a member of the Senior Foreign Service with the rank of Minister Counselor.
