Two points of view on Israeli-Palestinian conflict to be aired 4/21/03 Dr. Iddo Netanyahu, brother of the former Israeli prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu, will speak at 8 p.m. Wednesday (April 23) in Room 114, Seidlin Hall, on the Alfred University campus. His appearance is sponsored by Hillel at Alfred.Dr. Netanyahu's appearance on the AU campus offers people a choice of speakers with disparate viewpoints on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. The Russell Lecture,, scheduled for 8 p.m. Wednesday in Holmes Auditorium, Harder Hall, will feature Dr. Norman G. Finkelstein, a Fulbright senior specialist and a professor of political science at DePaul University. The title of his lecture is "The Origins of the Israeli/Palestinian Conflict." Dr. Iddo Netanyahu, a physician and author who now makes his home in upstate New York, will assess the Israeli-Palestinian conflict in the wake of the second Iraq war, and will also field questions from the audience.A member of one of Israel's most prominent families, Dr. Netanyahu's father, Benzion Netanyahu, is a highly-regarded historian and author. His older brother, Jonathan, was killed in 1976 leading an elite Israeli commando unit that rescued more them 100 Air France passengers held by plane highjackers at Entebbe airport in Uganda. Dr. Netanyahu, who later became a member of the same commando unit, wrote a book about the Entebbe rescue mission. "With Israel demonized by much of the mideast world, this is an unusual opportunity to participate in a knowledgeable question-and-answer discussion about one of today's most vexing political issues," said Dr. Gary Ostrower, professor of history and one of the event's organizers.Finkelstein, a controversial speaker and writer for his stand on the Israeli/Palestinian Conflict, is the author of four books, including Image and Reality of the Israeli/Palestinian Conflict; The Rise and Fall of Palestine, written with Ruth Bettine Birn; A Nation on Trial: The Goldhagen Thesis and Historical Truth; and The Holocaust Industry: Reflections on the Exploitation of Jewish Suffering.Both talks are open to the public, free of charge..
