Daviess County Public Schools 1622 Southeastern Parkway Matt Robbins Owensboro KY 42303 Superintendent www.dcps.org Phone 270-852-7000 February 23, 2018 DCPS kids ‘Read Across Daviess County’ Classrooms across the Daviess County Public Schools district are participating in a variety of activities to celebrate “Read Across America.” The annual event is sponsored by the National Education Association with the official celebration on March 2, the birthday Dr. Seuss, the author of iconic children’s books such as “The Cat in the Hat.” Provided here is a PARTIAL list of reading activities taking place in DCPS schools, along with contact information for each school: East View Elementary School 6104 Kentucky 405, 270-852-7350 – Maggie Ballou EVES will welcome special guest readers at 1 p.m. Friday, March 2, including members of the Daviess County High School football and soccer teams, deejays Chad Benefield and Angel Welsh, the Chick-fil-A cow, and DCPS director of elementary education James Lyddane. The classes that record the most time spent reading will have the opportunity to “silly string” principal Sonya Simpson and assistant principal Brandon Brooks. Students will also participation in special dress-up days next week (Feb. 26-March 2). Meadow Lands Elementary School 3500 Hayden Road, 270-852-7450 – Kevin Lowe MLES students will celebrate “Read Across America” on Friday, March 2, as students in grades 3-5 will read to students in grades K-2. Community volunteers will also visit the school to read to students starting at 12:30 p.m. Students and staff will also dress up as their favorite Dr. Seuss book characters. Southern Oaks Elementary School 7525 U.S. 431, 270-852-7470 – Jennifer Humphrey SOES will celebrate “Read Across America” each day next week (Feb. 26-March 2) with a special theme taken from a Dr. Seuss book, fun activities and dress-ups planned for each day. Monday is “I am Not Going to Get Up Today” and “The Sleep Book,” with kids wearing pajamas and reading during morning assembly. Tuesday is “My Many Colored Days,” and everyone is invited to wear as many different colors as possible. Wednesday is “If I Ran the Zoo”; everyone will gather in the school hallways at 7:45 a.m. to read to their favorite stuffed animals. Thursday is “I Can Lick 30 Tigers Today” and “On Beyond Zebra” day, when everyone will wear stripes. Friday is “Happy Birthday to You!” and everyone will dress as their favorite Dr. Seuss character as they wish the author a happy birthday and enjoy a Dr. Seuss movie! Whitesville Elementary School 9656 Kentucky 54, 270-852-7670 – Elaine Howard WES will celebrate a Dr. Seuss book-inspired theme and dress-ups each day next week. Monday is “Fox in Socks,” inviting everyone to wear silly or mismatched socks. Tuesday is “Oh the Places You’ll Go!” in which kids will dress for their future careers. Wednesday is “My Many Colored Days,” when everyone will wear a colorful shirt. Thursday is “Green Eggs and Ham,” and everyone will wear green. Everyone will dress as their favorite Dr. Seuss character to celebrate the author’s birthday on Friday.
