CHESS GAME INSTRUCTIONS Your goal is to capture the King with a checkmate! ITEMS NEEDED Two Players One Chess board Each player has one King, one Queen, two Rooks, two Bishops, two Knights, and eight Pawns SET-UP Rooks are placed on the outside corners, right and left. Knights are placed immediately inside of the Rooks. Bishops are placed immediately inside of the Knights. Queen is placed on the central square. White Queen on the white square and black Queen on the dark square. King takes the vacant spot next to the Queen. Pawns are placed one square in front of all of the other pieces. BASIC MOVES Rooks may move any number of vacant squares - horizontally or vertically. Knights may move two squares horizontally then one square vertically, or one square horizontally then two squares vertically—i.e. in an "L" pattern. The Knight is the only piece that may jump over other pieces. Bishops may move any number of vacant squares - diagonally. The Queen moves any number of vacant squares - horizontally, vertically, or diagonally. The King may move only one square - horizontally, vertically, or diagonally. Pawns may move straight forward one square, if that square is vacant. If there are two squares vacant, the pawn can move straight two squares. Pawns may not move backwards and only diagonally one space when capturing an opposing piece. CHECK AND CHECKMATE A King is in "check" when it is under attack by at least one enemy piece. Any piece may legally block or overtake an opponent's checking piece. The King in check may also legally overtake the checking piece, or legally move out of check. If it is not possible to move or block the checked King - the King is checkmated and the game is over. GAMES PARTNER.
