1 IEEE Sendai Section Annual Report 2019 PART A - SECTION SUMMARY A.1 Executive Summary Section Highlights o Metro Area Workshop 2019 in Sendai was successfully held on 24th October, 2019. o 2 Affinity Groups were newly established in Sendai Section . Life Members Affinity Group (Sendai LMAG) [established on 20th March, 2019] . Young Professionals Affinity Group (Sendai YP) [established on 21st June, 2019] o Received “R10 Best Membership Retention Medium Section Award” o Received following recognitions . 2019 Outstanding Section Membership Retention Performance . 2019 Outstanding Section Membership Recruitment and Retention o Sponsored Special Lecture Meeting “Toward an idealized resilient communication system” [13th December, 2019] o Co-sponsored “2019 Tohoku-Section Joint Convention of Institute of Electrical and Engineers, Japan (TSJC)” at Akita University [22nd -23rd August, 2019] o The following Administrative Meetings of Sendai Section were held. Sendai WIE Special Session on TSJC “Research attraction as narrated by women” [22th August, 2019] o The Sendai LMAG Establishment Symposium including Establishment Ceremony and General Meeting was held. Total number of active members in the past 3 each years is 711(2019), 705(2018), 708(2017). The following 4 Chapters are active and have good activities. SP01 Sendai Chapter held 4 technical meetings. 3 . COM19 Sendai Chapter held 4 technical meetings. EMC27 Sendai Chapter held 16 technical meetings. MAG33 Sendai/Sapporo Joint Sections Chapter held 5 technical meetings. B.3 Professional and Continuing Education Activities Technical Meetings Technical Program Committee arranged following technical meeting on section revel. o Sponsored . Metro Area Workshop 2019 in Sendai [24th October, 2019] “Information and communication technology that contributes to a super-smart society” To make the IEEE activities widely recognized by industry, Metro Area Workshop 2019 was organized by Sendai Section with over 90 participants. In this workshop, 5 special lectures focused on advanced information and communication technology that are expected to have more and more impact on future society were provided. Lecturer: Dr. Fumiyuki Adachi (ROEC, Tohoku University) Dr. Masayoshi Esashi (MEMS CORE Co., Ltd. / μSIC, Tohoku University) Dr. Iwao Waga (NEC Solution Innovators, Ltd.) Special Lecture Meeting [13th December, 2019] Motivated by the experience of The East Japan Great Earthquake Disaster, we have organized a series of the lecture meetings on “technologies covered by IEEE can contribute to disaster recovery, prevention, safety measures and regional industrial development” since 2011. In 2019, we held the lecture meeting as theme about the resilient communication system. “Toward an idealized resilient communication system” Lecturer: Prof. Hiroki Nishiyama (Tohoku University) Venue: RIEC, Tohoku University, Sendai, Japan Participants: 41 o Cooperated . The 10th International Conference on Awareness Science and Technology (iCAST2019) [23rd - 25th October, 2019] Venue: AIINA 7th & 8th Fl., Morioka, Iwate, Japan . Lecture Meeting [4th December, 2019] Lecturer: Dr. Hiromitsu Awano (Osaka University) Venue: Hirosaki University, Aomori, Japan Educational Activities Student Activities Committee arranged a seminar for students on TSJC. Seminar for improving presentation skills in English [23rd August, 2019] Venue: Akita University, Akita, Japan Participants: 49 B.4 Students Activities Two Student Branches are active in Sendai Section. 4 o Tohoku University Student Branch Chair: Hiroaki Hashida . Attended Student Branch Leadership Training Workshop at Waseda University [25th-26th May, 2019] . Joined as member of IEEE Japan SYWL workshop committee . Joined as the judge on Student Session o The University of Aizu Student Branch Chair: Shoichi Ichimura . Attended Student Branch Leadership Training Workshop at Waseda University [25th-26th May, 2019] . Graduate School Information Fair 2019 in University of Aizu [31st May, 2019] . Joined as the judge on Student Session Section level student activities o Student Session on TSJC (49 papers) o Seminar for improving presentation skills on TSJC (attendance:49) o Sendai Section Student Awards ceremony . 4 students were received The Best Paper Prize . 7 students were received The Encouragement Prize B.5 Affinity Group Activities Sendai Section Affinity Groups (WIE, LMAG, YP) co-sponsored IEEE Japan SYWL Workshop in Sendai 2019 “Dreams of STEM”. [25th October, 2019] Venue: Aobayama Commons, Tohoku University Participants: 41 Sendai WIE (Sendai Section Women in Engineering Affinity Group) Chair: Qiaowei Yuan (National Institute of Technology, Sendai College) o The Sendai WIE 2nd Anniversary Event “Career and Gender” [16th April, 2019] At this Event, an interesting special lecture entitled “Research and Gender - Experiences in Industry and Academia -” was presented by Prof. Nahoko Kasai (Tokyo Metropolitan University). After this, panel discussion was held by 3 female engineers and researchers presented their individual research and carrier model and discussion with audience was actively done. Special Lecturer: - Prof. Nahoko Kasai (Tokyo Metropolitan University) Panelists: - Ms. Emi Yano (IEEE R10 WIE Coordinator / Ricoh IT Solutions Co., Ltd.) - Prof. Chaoyang Li (Kochi University of Technology) - Dr. Kyoko Okudaira (The University of Aizu) Venue: RIEC, Tohoku University, Sendai, Japan Participants: 31 o Sendai WIE Special Session “Research attraction as narrated by women” [22nd August, 2019] The objective was to attract more female students, researchers and practitioners to enjoy research and engineering. It was held for the second time from its first inception in 2018 with six oral presentations covering computer applications, sensors, health related issues and so on. At the end of the session, an interesting special talk entitled “Carrier development as a “KUROMONO” or carbon material scientist” was presented by Dr. Noriko YOSHIZAWA (AIST, Japan).
