Tikey Zes (b. 1927) is the most prolific composer of Greek Orthodox D liturgical music in America. Long a proponent of Zes’s music, Cappella appella Romana releases its 21st recording with these performances of music Romana will perform excerpts of a setting of his Divine Liturgy which Cappella C for Good Friday in Medieval Jerusalem. Hear Medieval Byzantine chant, Romana released on CD last season. Preceding the Zes are selections of the Missa the fraternal repertoire to Latin chant in the West, composed for 8th- and 9th-century MiMi by Johannes Ockeghem, who with other masters of the Renaissance inspired celebrations of Holy Week in Jerusalem’s Church of the Holy Sepulchre. Hymns by Zes’s approach to modal harmony and counterpoint. Zes recorded the Ockeghem Jerusalem’s great church fathers—Patriarch Sophronios, Kosmas the Melodist, and Missa MiMi on LP with his Berkeley Chamber Singers in the 1960s, at the dawn of Saint John Damascene—include the famous Orthodox hymn “Semeron krematai” the modern Early Music movement.
