QRCS provides winter relief to displaced Syrians The Peninsula fuel to operate civil defence and municipality vehicles in Douma, Eastern Gouta, which is stricken by violence, poverty, overpricing and the lack of fuel used for ambu- lance, evacuation, debris removal, firefighting and other DOHA: Qatar Red Crescent Society (QRCS) has undertaken services. projects worth $1.133 (over QR4.12m) to provide winter relief QRCS is providing $33,000 worth of fuel for 125,000 to displaced people in conflict zones in Syria. people. Through its Turkey office, QRCS has begun to procure The three-month project involves two phases: Distri- bution of 5,000 litres from November through December, and 10,000 litres until next month. Strategically located about 9km northeast of Damas- cus, Douma is the centre of Rif Dimashq Governorate and the administrative centre of Damascus Ghouta, home to more than 2.196 million people facing difficulty in meet- ing their basic needs due to lack of money and scarcity of food, medical and relief supplies. Under the Warm Winter programme, QRCS has begun distributing $1.1m winter aid to 59,625 people across Syria, in cooperation with SDI and IHR non-govern- mental organisations. The project seeks to protect the Syrian children against cold winter, help reduce child mortality rates, encour- age children to go to school and live normally, and create job opportunities for small and medium workshops and factories. It also seeks to reach out to the beleaguered and most needy areas, offer handicraft training for women and girls to generate income, restore and winterise damaged homes, and secure household heating oil. The project will cover large parts of Damascus, Rif Dimashq, Daraa countryside, Homs, Idlib countryside, western and southern Aleppo countryside and eastern Hama countryside. QRCS personnel are distributing winter clothes to 30,500 children and heating oil to 28,125 people and restoring 100 homes, according to a statement. There are thousands of indirect beneficiaries, includ- ing 150 workers at 14 workshops that manufacture the required material and 28 staff recruited for project man- agement and supervision. Distributions continues until mid-January. Challenges include the unavailability of raw mate- rial, security risks at distribution points and inability of workshops to deliver the required output in time. To overcome them, coordination is done with the executive partners to ensure the provision of raw mate- rial, choose safe distribution hubs, schedule distributions to avoid emergencies, ensure the contracted workshops are adequately staffed and monitor the manufacturing process daily. Since the eruption of the Syrian conflict, QRCS has been working to provide relief assistance to Syrian refugees and internally displaced persons with regard to healthcare, food and nonfood aid, shelter and water and sanitation. Over four years, the interventions have exceeded QR300m, serving more than one million Syrians.
