Kinloss, Moray

Kinloss, Moray Area profile Kinloss (Cinn Lois) is located near the shore of Findhorn Bay, around 3 miles (5 km) from Findhorn and 2.5 miles (4 km) from Forres. Northeast of the village is Kinloss Barracks, formerly RAF Kinloss which opened on 1 April 1939. The Cistercian Kinloss Abbey was created in 1150 by King David I of Scotland. Under Abbot Robert Reid the abbey became a center of academic excellence in the 1530s. Mary Queen of Scots stayed there in 1562 but over the years that followed, the lands and properties of the abbey were gradually run down, and in 1652 most of its stone was sold to Oliver Cromwell's army for use in the construction of their citadel in Inverness. It now lies almost completely ruined.
