For researchers in need of additional information, the book also includes a Preface, Acknowledgements, and Introduction with considerable current and historical background on the five collections of Le Plongeon photographs, the photographic methods of the Le Plongeons, and how the photos in five collections were duplicated and cataloged. A duplicate of each original Le Plongeon image recorded in this catalog is archived at the Wilson Library of the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill in the "Lawrence G. Desmond collection of Augustus Le Plongeon and Alice Dixon Le Plongeon Photographs." When requesting to view an image in the Wilson Library collection, reference the Lawrence G. Desmond Collection identification number 5268. Two collections of Le Plongeon photographic materials became public after this catalog was completed. The first was acquired by the Getty Research Institute (GRI) in Los Angeles around 2004 (Collection 2004.M.18), and includes more than 1,200 prints, negatives, lanternslides, stereo-cards, drawings, maps, and plans. The collection was cataloged for an online finding aid by GRI Special Collections Archivist Beth Ann Guynn, and is available using the following link: http://archives2.getty.edu:8082/xtf/view?docId=ead/2004.M.18/2004.M.18.xml;chunk.id =ref1785;brand=default The second collection, an album of 125 prints made by Alice Dixon Le Plongeon in the 1870s, was purchased in the 1980s by the Mexican photographer Manuel Bravo for Mexico’s Televisa Foundation, but not shown publically until 2011. The 2011 showing was at Mexico City’s Museum of Modern Art as part of an exhibit curated by José Antonio Rodriguez. 4 Contents Database Organization and Materials Description 6 Collection I American Museum of Natural History 11 Collection II Donald Dixon Album 75 Collection III Getty Research Institute 157 Collection IV Peabody Museum at Harvard University 172 Collection V Philosophical Research Society 218 About the author 363 5 Catalog Organization and Materials Description The catalog database is subdivided into five collections. Each photographic item in a collection has been cataloged using a data entry card with the fields as listed below. For illustration, sample data or the subject matter of entries for each field have been provided. Collections: American Museum of Natural History (AM) Donald Dixon Photo Album (DA) Getty Research Institute (GRI) Peabody Museum at Harvard University (PM) Philosophical Research Society (PRS) Catalog number: # 17 Museum photo identification number: PM-P2500F Subject: Archaeological Site Artifact Biological Document Drawing Ethnographic European exploration Geological Henry Dixon Painting Portrait View Medium: Lantern slide Print or Tracing Negative Type: Albumen Collodio-chloride printing-out paper Dry glass-plate Gelatin glass-plate Wet collodion glass-plate 6 Stereo: Yes or No Size: 4 x 8 Inches Description: Upper Temple of the Jaguars. Entrance to inner temple, south pilaster, north façade, K-8, bas relief. Cross Reference: X Ref: PM-P2500F or X Ref: PM-P2500F similar The Cross Reference field gives the catalog numbers of identical or similar photos in other collections. Similar photos are defined as having the same subject matter, but they were taken at a slightly different angle or time of day from the same camera position. The differences between similar photos are often subtle and hardly noticeable at first viewing. When the Cross Reference field does not list an identical photo in another collection that indicates that the photographic item is unique to that collection. Cross Index Numbers: Because the photos in the collections are not organized in chronological order by museum number, a Cross Index of catalog and corresponding museum numbers for each collection (except the Dixon Album) is provided. If the paper version of the catalog is being used, this can speed up the search for a photo data card in a large collection such as the Philosophical Research Society when a researcher has only the museum number of that photo. Summary of Collections by Subject Matter Items listed as documents, drawings or paintings, etc. are defined as photographic copies made by Alice and Augustus of original materials. The tracings of the murals at Chichen Itza are not photographic, and were duplicated by Douglas Munson using 8x10 inch negatives. It should be noted that the tracings housed at the Philosophical Research 7 Society are copies made by Alice and Augustus from the original tracings made in the field at Chichen Itza. The field tracings are archived at the Getty Research Institute.
