OUR CONNECTION WITH THE BA.RHYS OF BRITAIN Until reoently, the oonneotion between the Barrya or the Brit ish Idea and our imigrant ancestors was indicated only by a l'lidely held tradition that "three brothers,ll'illiam, James and Charles Barry" came to America between the years 1720 and 1732, "ffilliam settling in Williamsburg, Va.and Charles in Boston wheN be bees.me part-Ol'lller in, and Captain or,a fjhip that waa eventually lost ll:l.th all on boardJ that his only ohild, John, born posthumously, was brought up by the Virgin ia relatives but that he finally returned to Boston mere his subsequ ent rrarriage, the birthll or hi• eleven ahildren, and his own eemae in the Revolutionary War, are matters of public reoord. '£his "family traditionn is reoorded in the above-~ntioned nNotes" ire.de by Rev.John Stetson Barry and by his brother Re-v.i'l'illiam Bury, Jt",i end alao in letters written by Dr. Wm. Taylor Barry and by Mr. H. T. Barry (both being descendants of iiillia.m, brother of Charles) showing tha.t the above-quoted "tradition" 11as handed on among the members of both the Charles and the 1'fillis.m tiarry immigrant branches of the family. It is repeated by Mr. Herbert Barry in his "Reoord of Five Generations of the Descendants of Charles Ba.rryn in l which he aleo gives -~ quota.tions from -public records ehowing the prominence. in the history of Gres.t Britain e.nd Irellllld, of individ us.le bearing the Barry name, aioong them being SIR ROBER'!: BARRY ffl\O 'WII.I in -possession of Dongcurney Castle. Thie etaternent W&e made in 1906. DISCOVERY OF THE NEEDED "OOCUJ,!ENTARY EVIDENCE" In the SI.Ui:llt8r of 1933, while ~ 'Wife and I were on our first trip to Califomia,we called on Col.ID.aha.el H.
