Using Twitter as their principal communication mechanism, the map was populated in a few hours with details on the temporary shelters. By midnight, over 180,000 people had accessed the map, and many stranded commuters were eventually spared the ordeal of spending a night out in the cold.3 What happened in Tokyo was not an isolated event. From the uprisings in Egypt to the capture of Osama Bin Laden, collaborative technologies have been used to share important information and inform the global Japan after the 2011 earthquake community.
