Global Odyssey: a Bibliography of Travel Literature Before 1940

Global Odyssey: A bibliography of travel literature before 1940 Compiled for the Center for the Study of Global Change by Melissa S. Van Vuuren Angela Courtney Indiana University Bloomington 2006 PREFACE As a genre, travel literature is as diverse as the cultures, places, and peoples that span the globe. This bibliography comprises travel literature written in the English language prior to 1940 by travelers and explorers who were venturing outside their countries of residence. For the purposes of this bibliography, travel literature is defi ned as the narrative accounts written about an individual’s or group’s encounter with another place. These writings, also referred to as travelogues, recount in detail the writer’s experiences and perceptions of that place. Travel literature, however, should not be confused with travel guides, which provide readers with more pragmatic information about a specifi c place. The travel literature included in this bibliography should allow the reader to experience a particular culture, place, or people through the eyes of the writer. Due to the variety and amount of works that could potentially be considered travel literature, the compilers of this bibliography decided to exclude several sub-genres, including travel guides, emigration advice, promotional material sponsored by cities, railroad schedules, and guides for ship pilots. The bibliography is arranged geographically by destination, and when one title includes several geographic destinations, it will appear in each section. Recent advances in technology allowed us unprecedented access to bibliographic resources, and titles were selected with the help of numerous electronic and print resources, including the Nineteenth Century Short Title Catalog, Early English Books Online, Eighteenth Century Collections Online, and WorldCat, among other bibliographies and guides.
