Welcome to VOL. 19 2017-18 of "SPIRIT WEEKLY" Spirit Weekly presented by Yeo & Yeo CPAs & Business Consultants. Welcome to Spirit Weekly! THIS WEEK IN SPIRIT HOCKEY: On Thursday night, the Saginaw Spirit (27-22-8-0) traveled to the Meridian Centre for a matchup against the Eastern Conference's Niagara IceDogs. In the opening stanza, Saginaw peppered the Niagara goaltender Stephen Dhillon with 23 shots, but was unable to break through on the scoreboard until the second period. The IceDogs, however, struck first when Pittsburgh Penguins signee Sam Miletic tallied a powerplay goal, creating a one-goal Niagara lead after one period. In the second period, the IceDogs doubled their advantage when former Spirit Kirill Maksimov displayed a smooth deke near the Spirit crease and scored just 1:42 into the frame. Saginaw answered, though, when Jacob Goldowski corralled a deflected Reilly Webb shot and scooped the puck into the net. This play marked Goldowski's 10th goal of the 2017-18 campaign and Webb's first assist as a member of the Spirit. The IceDogs pulled away in the final period as Maksimov logged his 2nd goal of the night and Ben Jones added an empty net goal to secure a 4-1 Niagara win. Highlights Box Score On Friday night, the Saginaw Spirit (27-23-8-0) played the second of two road games in two nights with the most recent installment coming against the Erie Otters (19-29-7-3). Riding a two-game winning streak, Erie continued its success with an opening two-goal period and held a 2-1 lead after 20 minutes. Blade Jenkins accounted for Saginaw's lone goal with a well-placed wrist shot on the powerplay. Neither team found the scoresheet in the second period, although Saginaw applied heavy pressure to close out the frame. In response, Erie buried two goals in quick succession during the third period to put the contest out of reach at 4-1. Erie outshot Saginaw by a slim margin, 27-26. Highlights Box Score On Sunday night, the Saginaw Spirit (27-24-8-0) began a four-game homestand with a contest against the Oshawa Generals (30-26-3-0) at The Dow Event Center. Spirit goaltender Evan Cormier was tested early and often as the Generals manufactured 39 shots on the night with Cormier stymieing 37 such chances. Neither team scored for the first 39 minutes before Generals captain Jack Studnicka scored on an Oshawa breakaway with 58 seconds remaining in the second period. Oshawa later deposited an empty net goal to secure two points in their 2-0 victory. Highlights Box Score Visit Our Website Upcoming Events vs. SAULT STE. MARIE WED.
