Sunday March 12, 2018 3 GETTING TO KNOW YOU by Doris Hoover Daniel Arthur Haggerty was born to Patrick and Minnie Haggerty on January 4, 1935, in an old farm house located in Five Points, PA. Dan is the youngest of 12 children, 7 boys and 5, living on a farm near Indiana, PA. Dan says “when they found the best, they quit having children”. His father was a coal miner which meant long hours of continuous hard labor. Dan’s mother managed the farm while tending to their 12 children. Dan attended the Bell School at Five Points, a one-room school house. He continued his education at the Marion Center School, and in those days, there was no school bus. He traveled the 25 miles distance everyday whether it is the hot humid days or the cold blistery snowy days of Pennsylvania. But during the second semester of the ninth grade he had to leave school to work on the farm. He also was employed for 2 years at the Indiana Hospital but on February 29, 1955, Dan packed his bag and joined the U.S. Navy. He served in Viet Nam with a tour of duty on 5 aircraft carriers. Dan retired from naval services in 1974, with 20 years service. At some point during his navy career, and on a week-end leave, Dan and his best navy friend visited Ocean City, MD. This is when he met the love of his life, Maggie. They wrote faithfully to each other during his military enlistment. She was a student and upon her 1959 graduation the two were engaged and married March 1961. Their life together was adventurous during the military years. With their 4 children (1 girl, 3 boys) the youngest 18 months and the oldest 10 years, they shared a courageous and daring trip across the United States. Dan had two weeks to report to Alameda, CA and board the US Enterprise. Starting from Philadelphia, the Haggerty family drove and camped out every night. It was a great two week experience for everyone, one they will never forget. The Haggerty family moved to Milford bought a house in Eastman Heights in 1998. Sadly, Maggie passed away December 5, 2014, after 54 happy years of marriage together. Dan is a member of the Milford Reformation Lutheran Church, MSC, life member to the VFW, American Legion, and Frederica Senior Center. His favorite color is blue, enjoys all foods but prefers the American cuisine. He is especially fond of a Wendy’s senior lunch or dinner and enjoys a visit to The Palace in Milford with friends for a delicious meal. Other favorites are TV western movies, especially those with Roy Rogers or John Wayne and enjoys listening to country and western songs. He says the best vacation ever spent was to Disney World, CA for one week with the family. He is Grand Dad to 5 grandchildren and 2 great- grandchildren. He spends many hours volunteering driving those folks who cannot drive to the market or to their doctor appointments. He is an ardent oil painter, (took lessons from FSC art teacher Delores Cubbage), wood working advocate, and spends many delightful hours playing cards with friends. Dan’s Word of Advice: Stay in school, get an education and do not go on dope. Daniel Arthur Haggerty is an enthusiastic and a passionate individual, always willing to help others, and always has a funny story or joke to share. Please give a hardy handshake to our member of the month.
