(torchwood) [CP:338] Barlaria sp. During a series of expeditions (1991-1999) to the Royal Bauhinia taitensis (bauhinia) [CP:282, for genus only] Bardia National Park in southwest Nepal (Fig. 1), we have been Boscia coriacea (evergreen, shepherd’s tree) [CP: 185, genus fortunate to study a very interesting population of wild elephants, only] in particular the very large bulls known as “Raja Gaj” (“King Boswellia hildebrandtii (frankincense tree of the Bible) [B+:94, Elephant”) and “Kansha” (“Younger”) (Fig. 2) (Blashford-Snell for genus only] and Lenska, 1996). Bardia comprises approximately 1,000 square Cassia sp. (cassia) [CP:287] kilometers (about 400 square miles) within the Terai zone, Cenchrus ciliaris (buffergrass) dominated by Sal forest but with a diversity of habitats including Chloris myriostachya (pasture grass) [for genus only] open grassy areas and riverside environments. Food for the Combretum aculatum (combretum) [CP:662, B+:138] elephants was plentiful. The elephants share the ecosystem with Commiphora baluensis, C. rivaris [B+:144, for genus only] other ungulates (especially deer, wild boar and Indian one-horned Cordia [B+:150] rhino), carnivores (including tiger, leopard and jackal), monkeys Delonix elata [B+:160] (langur and macaque) and many smaller mammals and birds (Gurung Digitaria sp. (a grass) and Singh, 1996). Before human disturbance, the Terai covered Diospyros mespilliformis (African ebony) [B+:168] most of southern Nepal and adjacent northern India to the south of Disperma sp. a range of hills known as the Siwaliks or Churias. The Siwaliks Dirichletia glaucenscens [CP:842, for genus only] are famous for their rich fossil assemblages, including those of extinct elephantids (Osborn, 1942; Maglio, 1973). Eragrostis superba (a grass) Euphorbia candelabrum (African candelabrum) [S:320] Wild elephants in Nepal are now estimated at no more than Ficus sycomorus (sycamore fig) [B+:212] 50-100 individuals (Sukumar and Santiapillai, 1996). These are Grewia [CP:547, B+:222, for genus only] known to migrate across the borders between India and Nepal, and Hyphaene coriacea (doum palm) [S:22] the Bardia population, for example, has fluctuated greatly from Indigofera (river indigo, nitrogen fixer) [CP:305] only two individuals (Raja Gaj and Kansha) in the early 1990s, to Ipomoea mombassana (morning glory family) [S: 196] over 40 in 1999. The erratic movements of the present elephant Lannea [CP:459, B+:246, for genus only] population can be seen as a disturbed remnant of former regular Melia volkensii (African mahogany) [CP:381, for genus only] seasonal migrations across unbroken Terai (Lister, 1995). Today, Newtonia hildebrandtii (tamarind) [CP:256] animals seem principally to be moving between Bardia and Sukila Platycelyphiium voens Phanta Wildlife Reserve (White Grass Plains Reserve; cf. Byrne, Populus ilicifolia (Tana river poplar) [PC:91] 1990, p. 42), some 80 km to the west. January 2000 Lister and Blashford-Snell — Exceptional elephant size and form in Nepal 35 Kansha were always seen in each other’s company, but with the in Nepal: animals were aged by appearance in the field, arrival of other bulls in the park, more complex, shifting alliances photographed in lateral view, and measurements taken from between the bulls have been observed. We currently have detailed photographic prints. Most data points are from our 1998 data on eight adult males, and observations on herds totaling expedition to Nagarahole. A few are from photographs of now- around 35 females and young. Another very large bull, studied at deceased old bulls from Nagarahole, kindly provided by Colonel J. Sukila Phanta by Byrne (1990), was “Tula Hatti” (“Great Wakefield. The remainder are photographs from Mudumalai Elephant”). He was, unfortunately, killed in 1995 after stepping kindly provided by Dr. R. Sukumar. Absolute shoulder heights are on a mine intended for wild boar. restricted to the latter sample (data from R.
