But for the members of the Chabad Jewish Center of South Brunswick, their Purim in Peking Feast put an Asian twist on the traditional Jewish holiday. The event was held March 24 at Pierre's Ballroom in Monmouth Junction. Purim celebrates the survival of Jews facing annihilation 2,360 years ago dur- ing the reign of King Achashverosh. It is observed by giving gifts, enjoying a fes- tive meal and dancing. Children dressed in costume listened to a Megillah reading and participated in a kung-fu performance while parents bid in a Chinese auction. The main theme of the night was togetherness. "It is a nice holiday to celebrate. It is very festive. I like the food. I hope there is dancing," said Lhava Israel, 33, of East Brunswick. Rabbi Levi Azimov said his favorite part of the night was being joyous. "The highlight of the holiday is the PHOTOS BY MIGUEL JUAREZ staff festive meals, saying 'L'Chayims' and ttay Keren (i), standing with friend Rob Kline, wears a nontradftional castume to the Chabad Jewish Center's "Purim In Peking" celebration. dancing.
