As, I like to think, a THE CHAIRMAN steady club cricketer, the thrill for me was to test myself against many first-class cricketers including a number with international honours such as Chris Cowdrey, Richard Ellison, Alex Loudon, Nick Knight, Derek Pringle, Graham Roope and Roger Tolchard. It is very pleasing to know that perhaps they were also nervous when facing my limited off spin, as revealed by Andrew Strauss’s remarks for the 50th anniversary dinner brochure that “as a professional cricketer, the pressure to win a Cricketer Cup game for your school is like nothing on earth”. Secondly, and most importantly, the life-long friendships that I have cemented amongst both Oundle Rovers and the wide variety of opponents have made the Cricketer Cup the favourite cricket that I have played. I know that many feel the same way. While stressing that the competition is in rude health, the officers and the committee have strong ambition and indeed one or two nascent ideas as part of our mission. We would like to see even more spectators at the Arundel finals; we would like to further strengthen the competition’s finances, perhaps with a view to helping kick-start a ladies competition in due course, and we wonder whether there is a role for the thirty-three clubs working together to help each other confront some of the challenges facing After nearly forty years of involvement in the amateur club cricket and our clubs in particular. Additionally the fact that we are welcome to hold the final at Arundel, arguably the most beautiful first class Tim Elliott ground in the country, is further testament to the Oundle Rovers CC status of the competition.
