CUNY ARCH 4710 - CITY OF THE PAST DESIGN STRUCTURE OF BAROQUE ROME Pope Sixtus main purpose was to make the city of Rome worthy of the church by recreatting the city. He hit upon the happy notation of using Egyptian obelisks, which Rome had a subtantial number. He used the obelisks as focal point towards his design. Sixtus V commissioned the engineer and architect Domenico Fontana to relocate the vaian obelisk to the front of the saint Basilica. It monolithic shape would also fit with Sixtus’ plan to make Rome ROME look like center of religious and temporal power on Earth. Pope Sixtus promoted his vision of “Roma in forma sideris” which is Rome in a shape of a 1585 - 1656 star. He engaged Domenico Fontana and other planners to lay out processional avenues linking the great Basilicas, such as Santa Maria Maggiore MANUELA LOPEZ and San Giovanni in Laterano, with other strategic points. ARNULFO MORALES In 1655 a new pope was elected, Alexander VII. He commissoned sculptor and architect Gian Lorenzo Bernini to create a new square in front MIMU SAKUMA of the St. Peter’s Basilica. The famous Colonnade is also known as “The Piazza of St. Peter” The design of this grand opening was to make an open arm to the church, a grand approach to the church but it had to be planned so people can see the pope give his blessings. 248 columns, 88 pilasters 140 oversized saint statues 3.2 meter high. Pope Sixtus main purpose on creating the new path is to make the city church worthy, making the basilicas the focal point of the city. On this map there is a clear view on how each basilicas ROME connect with each other. On the old map shows how the connection and path towards the main focal point are far apart from one another. Showing that 1585 - 1656 Pope Sixture urban development is a sucess. Going back to Sextus V main design into designing a holy place for the city of Rome. As a result he used this design mainly on the city of Vatican, in where he decided to have an obelisk and save them in oreder to have them as main points with plazas and have them as entrance to their Basillica. In this ROME point Vatican City was mainly on Basillica St. Peter and make this as a terminal point, as the main entrance from the East side. While crossing River 1585 - 1656 Tiber the main Basillica is St. Peter and it was designed as an open arm, to the city as greeting people to this holy place. The process i got was also ARNULFO MORALES from the circultion that sextus V had. On the first map analysis i was studying about the main circulation, there isnt really a point that grabs peoples attention, but rather everything scattered, the obelsik are all far apart, the streets are narrow, and then on the now present map on Vatican City is this sort of sprial entrance in where the colonnade, obelisk and basillica St. Peter stand.
