Due to a temporary staff shortage at the County we do not have the September circulation numbers as of October 9, 2018. During the month, 80 children and adults attended Book Babies Storytimes and 130 children and adults attended Storytimes for preschoolers. ANNOUNCEMENTS: NUTS AND BOLTS Coming in 2019, the Library will be proud to host a new adult group called Word Play. This will be a Writers' Group for those 18 and older, it will begin in January 2019 and meet once a month on the first Thursday of the month from 5pm until 7pm at the library. The first date for the new program will be January 3, 2019. Recently I was considering how many more new programming opportunities the Library could add without impacting other basic functions. Being data driven I decided to bench the 2016 – 2017 numbers for North Plains against its nearby WCCLS sister libraries. I discovered that North Plains produced more programming per FTE than any of these nearby libraries for the most recent Oregon statistics year. We are already outperforming all the listed libraries, in some cases by a factor of two. In FY 2016 – 2017 it was 189 events. In fiscal year 2017 – 2018 we created 214 program events. We project that we will create more than 230 program events this fiscal year. ANNOUNCEMENTS: ART MATTERS Here is a rundown of our art offerings coming up in the next few months: Artist’s trading cards Each month Marie Buckley and other local artists meet to share Artist Trading Cards (ATCs). These miniature works of art are designed to match a set theme and are about the size of a baseball card. The event occurs at 6pm on the third Thursday evening of each month. This is a fun way to meet other artists and exchange art creations. The ATC exchange is free and open to the public. Our ATC topics for the remainder of 2018 are as follows: October is Chemistry, November is Windows, and December is Monsters. In library art display In September and October we will feature the stunning carving and relief work of Jim Orman. Here is what the artist had to say about his amazing work: “I’ve been building things since the 1960’s. First stage sets, then I learned cabinetry which lead to general carpentry and furniture design. The idea born from doing the work was that it was possible for the inanimate to achieve its own motion through design and execution. I was introduced to carving in the 1990’s and became an avid student. Because I am self- taught, my style is all over the place. I am currently working with and combining different techniques. Sculpture, Relief Carving, and Chip Carving with a small amount of Veneer Work thrown into the mix. I am fascinated with the face, both human and other animals, capturing all the ways it is able to express itself. Because my work is subtractive I only have a vague notion of where we are going. The wood generally leads the way. Always seeking expression”. In November and December we will feature the amazing art of Maryam Shariati, freelance and fine artist. Maryam is a graduate of the PNCA School of Illustration. She loves to paint in many mediums including gouache, and her work focuses on dreams, cats, fiction, magic, and music. Craft Guild meeting Join our informal group of knitters and quilters from 6pm until 8pm on the first Wednesday evening of each month. Anyone interested in gathering for camaraderie as you work on your individual projects is welcome to do so at the library. This is intended to be an informal get-together of crafters, with no formal instruction. Quilt Display The September – October quilt is a queen size quilt constructed by Donna Fairchild. Here is what she had to say about this fine work of art: “A pattern called Basket Bounty by Moda was a block of the month at a quilt shop. So every month for 9 months I went to the class and was given instructions on how to complete the block. It was a learning experience that I really enjoyed. The basket pattern for each block is different and I enjoyed completing the blocks. It was nice to see all of the blocks finally completed and put together in a quilt and quilted by the long arm quilter”. In November and December we will be proud to display Starry Glow by Sue Nichols. Here is what the artist said about her work: “I saw this pattern in a quilting magazine and just knew I had to make it! I went to my "stash" and found these materials. As luck was with me, I had enough of each to complete the quilt. It was fun, but challenging to make because I had to make sure to get the green end connected to the green point and likewise with the other two fabrics. It was fun to put together and in the end, dearly loved”. ANNOUNCEMENTS: YOUTH SERVICES The following items summarize our upcoming program offerings for younger library patrons: OBOB Writers Club The OBOB Writers Club has a great lineup for the fall. Storytimes Children ages 0-6 are invited to participate every Wednesday at 11:30am in the children's section of the library. Model builders club Our new model building club will be running at North Plains Elementary School after early release each Wednesday afternoon until November 28th. The group will consist of 5th and 6th grade students and cover a full range of STEAM and historical activities. Family Fun Night Join us at the Library on the First Friday of each month for a free showing of a PG-rated movie, and a chance for parents to get their holds or have a quiet moment! Board games are available for older kids to enjoy. Mary and the Witch’s Flower This is a dazzling new adventure about a young girl named Mary, who discovers a flower that grants magical powers, but only for one night.
