FRYER LIBRARY Manuscript Finding Aid UQFL44 Sir Raphael Cilento Collection Size 40 boxes, 2 parcels Contents Personal and professional papers, including biographical material and family history, official correspondence 1927 to 1932, personal and professional correspondence 1932 to 1972, diaries 1913 to 1971, manuscripts, public lectures, radio scripts, reports, reprints, files relating to his service with UNRAA and United Nations, photographs. Interests include the Royal Historical Society of Queensland, National Trust of Australia and Australian League of Rights. Date range 1913 to [198-] Biography Sir Raphael Cilento was born in 1893 in Jamestown, South Australia. In 1918 he graduated from Adelaide Medical School and became a medical officer for the Australian Army in New Guinea. In 1922 he became Director of the Australian Institute of Tropical Medicine in Townsville. In 1924 he became Director of Health and Quarantine Services in New Guinea. From 1928 to 1933 he was Director of Commonwealth Division of Tropical Hygiene. From 1934 to 1945 he was Director General of Health and Medical Services, Queensland. In 1935 he was made a Knight Bachelor. From 1937 to 1945 he was Hon. Professor Social and Tropical Medicine, University of Queensland. He was admitted to the Bar in Queensland in 1939 and in 1945 he became chief medical officer for UNRAA in Germany. From 1945 to 1946 he was Director, Division of Refugees and Displaced Persons, United Nations. He returned to Australia in 1951. From 1953 to 1968 he was President of the Royal Historical Society, Queensland, and from 1966 to 1970 was President of the National Trust of Queensland. He died in 1985.
