CASTLETON – DANBY DALE – WESTERDALE & MOOR 7 MILES 5 HOURS On reaching Castleton leave car by first group of houses on the right side of the road (OS Grid Ref.663 078). Walk back on main road for about 75yds and then take FP on left S, which almost immediately forks. Take the right (upper) fork. The FP later becomes a gravel drive. Leave Forest Farm on your left, then Forest Lodge, then Holly Lodge Farm (fake FP bypass). Cross small road at Crag House Farm, then West Green Farm. Just before West Cliff turn right E on unmarked bridleway steeply uphill to reach main road. Turn left SSW on it for 1/3 mile, then sharp right NW downhill on small road. (An unmarked short cut is possible at side of Brown Hill to avoid most of walk on major road.) Take first FP on left to Brown Hill House and continue mainly W across field, then over FB to Broad Gate Road. There turn right NW on it continuing to first FP on left by which continue to Westerdale. Walk NW on road through the village past the church, and then steeply downhill and over ford (note ancient bridge on right), then steeply uphill over cattle grid to Westerdale Moor. Take first FP on right (just past disused quarry on the left) over moor. The path meanders bearing NE then N, then NE, eventually steeply downhill to cross stream on FB. Continue on FP close to the stream to reach road by Dibble Bridge. Turn right E on road steeply up, across junction and onto the parked car. A lovely walk by and through various farms with fields of flowering buttercups in early summer. Picturesque Westerdale village, then over moorland with many views. There are 3 short steep climbs but overall not difficult. Afternoon tea at Castleton Tea Rooms by taking car there to the centre of the village. Parking nearby may not be easy. If driving across the extensive moorland from the Hutton le Hole direction, and after passing the solitary Lion Inn, Ralph cross is passed on the left. Direct acces son the left to Westerdale on a narrow road is possible from there. Leaving Westerdale on way to Westerdale Moor Westerdale 5 CASTLETON – DANBY DALE – WESTERDALE & MOOR 6 1a DANBY -AINTHORPE - CROSSLEY GATE FARM - DANBY CASTLE 5½ (or 7) MILES 4 (or 5) HOURS . Leave car in lay-by immediately (E) after Danby cross roads past Duke of Wellington pub near PO & below bakery tea rooms. From cross roads walk along the road S over railway bridge to Ainthorpe. Turn left on curving road SW then S past Fox & Hounds Inn, continuing walking uphill SSE past entrance to Low Coombs Farm. After about 100yds the next footpath SSW climbs slowly through gorse, bracken and heather for about 1½ miles, up the moor (Ainthorpe Rigg). Take the steep descent into Little Fryup Dale (preferred shorter alternative marked by , to the longer but lovely scenic route as on map, along the top of the Danby Rigg moor) reaching the road and turning SE on the it to Stonebeck Farm where both ways meet. There turn left NE on track by the Farm until track on left is reached going to Forresters Lodge. Just in front of the Lodge turn right, pass through a gate and continue on FP bearing NW uphill until a quiet road is reached. There turn right on it, pass by Crossley Gate Farm, then bearing NW to Danby Castle. Just after continue on the left fork, and several yards after turn right NE on FP to just before Castle Houses. There turn left in a NW direction down hill and by a hedge until a road is reached. Turn left on it until Ainthorpe is reached, where join the road back to Danby. Walk with good views of Low Fryup Dale and hills around. Danby is a picturesque village. Bakery tea room provides excellent cakes for after walk tea. Danby castle was built in the 14th century by a Lord Latimer combining defence and comfortable living.. Later, one the 6th wife of Henry VIII (Catherine Farr) lived there. Longish drive over heather covered moors via Castleton . Danby centre. Road towards the station and Ainthorpe Danby village from Danby Rigg Descent into Fryup Dale from Danby Rigg Danby Castle ruin 7 Ralph Cross DANBY - AINTHORPE - CROSSLEY GATE FARM - DANBY CASTLE 8 2. CROPTON - SUTHERLAND LODGE – KELDY CASTLE 5 MILES 3 HOURS. Leave car in large lay-by on the right of the road from Cropton to Newton on Rawcliffe, after passing through Cropton, as the road turns sharp right E after Sycamore Farm (OS Grid Ref.759 896). The path starts on the left by the bend of the road through a gate, proceeding NE through a wood. After about 200 yds it emerges with a view of Cropton Bank. Descend down to a bend left N to Fall Rigg wood and through it towards Sutherland Beck. Cross the beck by FB. Walk up field to and through a farm, and onto an unpaved road for about 200yds. At T junction turn right. Continue on road, eventually past some small houses until another T junction is reached. Turn left NNW on it. Then take first road on right and right again (below Sutherland Lodge). Pass by Sutherland Cottage leaving it on your left, then follow track to Keldy Castle Forest Cabins. A sharp turn right is required to reach the cabins area and visitors’ centre. From there take road S past cabins through the wood down over a bridge, then uphill SE. Just after an ascent, a footpath (right of way, unmarked on road) starts on the right going W through the woods for about ½ mile, emerging into the open at Peat Rigg holiday centre. Pass through “Private” sign, and join road W from the centre to Skelton Banks Farm. There turn left S along the road until reaching the main road (Bradley Road). Turn right W along it for about 1/3 mile, past drive and path to Hen Flats, taking the next path left SW which turns WNW over a field and then along a track back to Cropton. A pleasant ½ day walk through woodland, fields and plantations. Loos in Keldy Castle Forest Cabins visitors centre. There is no castle. Cycle hire can be arranged there in summer months. Refreshments also available in the centre. Initial part of the walk can be boggy in wet weather.
