
9th Grade Honors English Summer Reading Assignment Instructions: Please choose two books from the list below to read before school starts. I will not collect your notes. The analysis guidelines below are suggested. Should you do them, you will be able to use them on your in-class assessment, which will happen within the first week of school. Should you do them, you will find them helpful. You will be able to use the book itself, if you choose to. You will not be able to use anything printed off a computer. Please note that some of the titles below contain some mature content; make your selections based on what you and your parents are comfortable with. Also please know that in addition to helping me get to know you as a reader and writer, this will be your first major grade. Analysis Guidelines 1. Describe the protagonist(s) using three precise adjectives and jot down what in the story led you to those conclusions. 2. Describe both parts of the setting (time and place) and what the author did in the novel to help you understand each of those things. 3. Think about what this story helps you understand about human nature or the way the world works (theme). How did the characters and events in the story help you as a reader gain this understanding?
