But in the fi nal 11/6 Long Beach State 15-9, 15-3 W 2-0 year before the implementation of the AIAW, 11/6 Cal State Northridge 12-15, 15-13, 15-8 W 2-1 UCLA women’s volleyball captured its fi rst- 11/10 Cal Poly Pomona 15-1, 15-4 W 2-0 11/12 Cal Poly 15-4, 15-2 W 2-0 ever crown with an 8-0 record at the DGWS 11/15 Cal Poly Pomona 15-9, 15-3 W 2-0 Nationals. Prior to the fall of 1972, the 11/17 Cal State Los Angeles 15-3, 15-5 W 2-0 women’s volleyball season was played out 11/22 Cal State Northridge L 0-2 from October to February. UCLA steamrolled 11/30 Occidental W 12/2 Cal State Los Angeles 1 15-2, 15-5 W 2-0 through the 1971 portion of its season with 12/3 Cal State Northridge 1 15-3, 15-7 W 2-0 a 20-1 record, dropping just six sets. The 12/3 Long Beach State 1 15-9, 15-10 W 2-0 1971-72 Nationals took place at Miami 12/4 Cal State Northridge 1 15-1, 15-9 W 2-0 2 Dade Junior College in February and the 2/3 Michigan State 15-1, 15-7 W 2-0 2/3 Mankato State 2 15-1, 15-8 W 2-0 Bruins continued their domination, pulling 2/3 Staten Island College 2 15-1, 15-0 W 2-0 out seven straight-set victories (sets were best 2-of-3). A bump in the road occurred 11/13 Cal State Northridge 15-9, 15-11 W 2-0 11/15 UC Santa Barbara 15-2, 15-9 W 2-0 just prior to the start of Nationals, when the 11/16 San Diego State 15-17, 15-5, 15-4 W 2-1 Bruins lost a pair of matches on Dec. 7 at 11/20 Long Beach State 19-17, 15-11 W 2-0 11/29 Cal State Northridge 2 15-11, 15-10 W 2-0 the SCWIAC Championships to UC Santa 11/29 UC Riverside 2 15-7, 15-4 W 2-0 Barbara and Long Beach State to fi nish third 11/30 Long Beach State 2 14-10, 15-1 W 2-0 11/30 Long Beach State 2 15-7, 15-8 W 2-0 in league. All eight 12/12 West Georgia 4 15-3, 15-1 W 2-0 matches over the three-day tournament 12/12 Illinois-Chicago 4 15-5, 15-9 W 2-0 12/13 Texas-Arlington 4 15-9, 15-8 W 2-0 would be straight-set victories, including a 12/13 Portland State 4 15-8, 15-4 W 2-0 15-7, 15-8 win on Dec. 14 against Hawai’i in the championship game. The only blemishes during 10/17 Long Beach State 15-5, 15-2 W 2-0 the 32-2 campaign were three-set losses to 10/22 USC 13-15, 15-7, 15-12 W 2-1 10/24 UC Santa Barbara 15-5, 15-5 W 2-0 Cal State Northridge and Long Beach State. 10/28 UC Irvine 15-8, 7-15, 15-8 W 2-1 The Bruins were challenged more than in 10/31 San Diego State 15-4, 15-4 W 2-0 11/1 UC Santa Barbara 2 15-1, 15-8 W 2-0 either of their previous two championship 11/1 Hawai’i 2 15-9, 15-5 W 2-0 runs, losing as many games in 1975 11/1 Long Beach State 2 15-3, 11-15, 15-3 W 2-1 (13) as in 1971-72 and 1974 combined 11/4 Cal State Northridge 15-4, 15-2 W 2-0 11/7 Long Beach State 15-13, 3-15, 12-15 L 1-2 (13). UCLA was perfect through 11/21 Long Beach State 3 15-11, 11-15, 15-3 W 2-1 11/22 Long Beach State 3 15-12, 10-15, 15-12 W 2-1 the fi rst six matches, not dropping a game 11/28 Cal State Northridge 4 15-7, 14-11 W 2-0 and setting up a rematch of the 1974 title 11/29 Long Beach State 4 10-12, 14-6, 16-14 W 2-1 contest against Hawai’i.
