We spent 7 days in England and 10 days in Scotland. Besides visiting many of the normal attractions and beautiful country side, we learned many new things. We were told that driving on the left side of the road dates back to the knights jousting with their right arm. Churchill's war room was very similar to the Greenbrier bunker, except it was actually used during WWII. We learned that the Presbyterian church in the United States came from the Reformed Church of Scotland and the Episcopal Church came from the Reformed Church of England. We even toured the Glenfiddich Distillery and learned they still make single malt scotch whiskey like they did in the 1800's. The 18 yr samples were pretty good! We were fans of the Downton Abbey television series and were able to visit Highclere Castle where it was filmed, and on the way to Oxford, visited the little village of Bampton where the church and cemetery scenes were filmed. While in London, we were able to break away from the group one morning and took a bus ride from the Victoria section of London to the Fulham area to locate the All Saints Fulham Church and see the burial marker of Bishop Humphrey Henchman. We have seen pictures and articles from past newsletters but wanted to see part of our heritage up close. We were able to find the church easily. It sits on a main street, almost at the Thames River. Entering the church, we stopped at the information desk asking for the location of the grave site. The attendant was new but she was able to contact someone who knew right where the memorial was. You can see from some of the pictures that it is located in the left corner just as you come in the main door, but had been covered by a rug to protect it. That is me with "Buster" the church dog. We took many pictures of the church that was established over 700 yrs ago. As we were preparing to leave, the attendant asked if we were going to visit Fulham Palace which was behind the church. We had already visited Buckingham Palace, Kensington Palace and several others, but decided while we were that close, why not? We walked through some beautiful gardens and reached the palace which was stately but smaller than the "tourist" palaces. Walking through the rooms, we learned that parts of the structure was built in the 700's and it was the summer home for the Bishops of London from then until 1973. It is now owned by a Historical Trust. While in one of the rooms we were asked about our visit by one of the historical guides. I explained about visiting All Saints Church to see our ancestor's grave. I gave her the name and showed her a picture of the marker. She proceeded to pull out a book, showed me his name and dates as Bishop, and explained to me that although Bishop Henchman is buried at All Saints Church, that his main church would have been historic St. Paul's Cathedral in London. He would have been third in line to the king. He was the Bishop of London during the great fire of London in 1660 which burned much of the city including St. Paul's Cathedral. She also explained that the crossed swords on the left part of the coat of arms on the marker indicated that he was a Bishop of London. We were able to purchase the palace history book at the gift shop with the names and coats of arms of all the Bishops of London. We were not able to spend much time there, but the combination of this visit plus the earlier visit to the archives at Marshall during the HHS Conference has certainly peaked my interest and I will be doing more research in the future!
